Because I buy only the scale wheeled power units, I haven't bought any dummy units in a while, and when I do it is with an eye toward using them for upgrade projects to fixed pilots and the like. I doubt that the problem is so much that non-powered units "don't sell," at least in the sense that they sit in inventory. They sell out rather quickly. I suspect the issue is relatively low sales and production cost in comparison to what MTH and the manufacturer make on each unit.

I think the post above (attributed to a reliable source) that lighting is an issue is interesting. Notice that in the last maybe two catalogs, Premier dummies have not been issued, but a number of Railking Scale models have been offered in powered and dummy versions. I don't believe the Railking Scale units have lighting (the only one I've purchased did not). Of course the Railkings have lower production costs because they typically don't have the add-on detail. Nonetheless, if people want MTH to re-think offering Premier dummy models, maybe lighting is something they should be prepared to give up. If so, you might speak up.

For my part, I never thought the insistence that lighting be added to dummy units was a good idea. Lighting only added to the cost, and in the real world, trailing locomotives in a multiple unit consist run with relatively few lights and rarely the ones illuminated on a model engine. In the age of three-rail traction tires, I suspect few people run dummy units in the lead. It seemed almost as if people were insisting that for the money, they get something inside the shell.

I too am very disappointed in the lack of non-powered units in the past two MTH catalogs.  I have more than 10 non-powered MTH units.  Like several others, I enjoy running 25+ car trains with multiple unit consists, and don't want the expense or additional maintenence for three or four powered units per train.  I also like the ability to mix and match Lionel, Atlas, Weaver, and MTH engines in either DCS or TMCC environments.

At york, I also spoke with Mike about the lack of dummies. He basically said that non-powered unit orders and sales were down to very low numbers in some cases, and thought that may be a symptom of the economy.  People are still buying trains, but they're cutting back a little, like just ordering powered instead of powered and dummy.  I told him I'd continue to order and purchase non-powered units where he offered them, and hoped that MTH would be responsive to the demand for non-powered units in the future.

FWIW, I also don't need lighted dummies, but perhaps manufacturers could sell lighting upgrade kits for operators who do prefer that flexibility.

Since cost and availibility is stated as the main issue causing MTH to discontinue offering Premier dummy units, I for one am more than willing to forego this feature. I never run dummies as lead motors and in prototypical operation trailing engines are not lit anyway. If many forumites fell the same way, why not start a write in campaign to MTH to see if we can get them to change their mind?

So the question remains...how can we get MTH to make non-powered units again?  I'm all for powered. Since I collect Milwaukee Road and Northern Pacific along with Burlington Northern and Montana Rail Link.  I'll take several Milwaukee Road powered and make a consist. But I'm not going to buy multiple BN SD45's or Milwaukee Road GP35's. I have to live within my means also...

But we need to be vocal and we need to convince MTH to make non-powered again.

My thoughts too.

I added battery powered LEDs for lighting in these MTH non-powered units - easier than pickups, etc.

Also, they make great less expensive photo props to add variety to a roster for magazine photos. Oops, now the cats out of the bag!

Jim,

First, I checked out your website.  WOW!  Beautiful family and layout....such creativity and talent.  Second, wondering if you could provide details on how you installed the LEDs.  I have an MTH GP-38 dummy that does not have any lights and would like to install LEDs with an on-off switch mounted on the underside if possible.  Again, many thanks for your insights.

What does that question have to do with dummy units?  You don't have to lash up a dummy unit in the trailing position. Im confused by that question.

I own several unpowered (dummy) units because I want ABBA's and multi unit consists of Dash 8's or Dash 9's, but don't need all the units powered. I can run a 4 unit consist with both ends powered and the middle units un-powered.

That's really disappointing from MTH, considering it saves me about $225 for each unit. I just wish they had made a 2R (fixed pilot) version of their non powered units as well. Looks funny running fixed pilots on each end with the middle units having the huge gap. It would take me years to convert all my 3R engines to fixed pilots!

Here's what I did in the last catalog. I pre-ordered the MTh Railking Scale Milwaukee Road FP45 powered and dummy. In Premier I pre-ordered 2 Burlington Northern SD45. I had to let the Milwaukee Road GP35 go.

This issue will become quite irritating when or if MTH makes juts powered Burlington Northern SD40-2 or Northern Pacific SD45 or U30C or U25C.

I like dummies for a force multiplier and long scale trains. Ask the Trackers! Short for me is 40 cars!

In an ABA set, are both A's powered?  Will they run that way in conventional mode without DCS?

You of all people, should be buying as many powered units as possible
