No sounds after ERR install

Contact Ken @ERR. I suspect the serial data from the radio is not reaching the sound board.

That is the conclusion Ken reached ...now how do I test for it or fix it myself vs sending it to someone?

Does lionel have wiring schematics for this loco online?

If you followed M install directions you had to attach serial data from mother board to Cruise M.  That is the serial data wire.  It has to go to tender for RS to work.  Is this a wire tether or IR tether?  Did you test engine immediately before installing upgrade?  G

yes I added serial wire

engine has tether and I have continuity thru tether

Could I temporarily jump serial wire from err to serial port in tender for test?

I added a jumper from pin 24 to serial port in tender and still no sounds 

Am I correct in that if radio board in loco was bad then cruise m wouldn't function?

What is the function of the 2nd board in tender (not the one with the sound chips) ?

What symptoms would exist if it were bad ?

THe RS and CM are separate, but what can happen is the Serial data may get degraded or corrupted.  YOu have 2 boards in tender besides the mother board.  One is the RS Board the other is the power Supply board for RS.  I would disconnect Serial data from Cruise M.  Also unplug 4 pin molex to prevent engine from moving.  With out serial data you might get full speed.  See if RS functions return.  Also make sure RS/Signal Sound switch in RS position.  If sounds return, the CCM is degrading serial data and you need a buffer.  I assume if this is early 2000 with tether, the unit is RS 4.0.  G

Why don't they mention this stuff in manuals? Does this happen often?

Loco is early 2000 with tether   # 6-18096  don't know which version of RS

It is not suppose to happen, but more and more recently I have seen this with the later ERR stuff.  A buffer is a transistor with some current limiting resistor that has to be home made.  It seems ERR stuff only work with ERR sounds set or else the later RS5 for the CCM.  If you do a search you will see several post on this.  I would call ERR first and talk to them explaining what has happed and see what ken says.  G

I assume this would mount in the loco near the radio board?

I plan to do a k line b6 similar setup with older tmcc and rs

Will this issue resurface or do  I have to install err ccm to find out ?

Let us know what you find out, I'm certainly interested in the issues with serial data between various components.  This is an ongoing problem we've seen for a few installations.

  Where do I get the parts you had in the circuit to fix this issue ?

I have a K Line B-6 slated for upgrade will this issue show up again?

This is what i miss old Radio Shack for. When you only need 1 or 2 of something right away they were handy to have around. Plus searching through the Mouser or DigiKey catalogues can be confusing unless you know how to use them. If you have a Radio Shack nearby or if they don't charge a fortune for shipping online orders, here's what i believe you need: Transistor - RSU 11328507; 100 ohm 1/2 watt resistor: 271-1108, or 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistor: 271-1311; 1000 ohm 1/2 watt resistor: 271-1118, or 1000 ohm 1/4 watt resistor: 271-1321.  GRJ didn't specify what size resistor so unless he corrects me i'd use the 1/2 watt ones to be safe.

I was searching on google and found a yearish old link to none other than OGR... same issue I had and same solution.

On older TMCC locos when doing a Cruise Commander modular conversion you must update to the  R4LC board to get sounds to function.

The CCM package doesn't include a R4LC  board so order one when you order your kit.

Not sure where that was stated, but it's not true.  I've upgraded a bunch of locomotives using the original R2LC using the CC-M, they've all worked just fine.  The only limitation I'm aware of is the R2LC should be a 08 or later firmware version, the earlier versions may not work properly with the CC-M.

Thanks for the correction, the bold lettered part was mine but it was the jist of the OGR thread.

My r2lc is 07c.  I used the r4lc from a full cc-m kit.

The loco works with the r4lc is it OK to leave it installed or should I get a r2lc08?

What's the difference between them?

Your OK.  The R4LC is the ERR version which used the hardware of the Legacy R4LC board, but has TMCC C08 software.  G

I put a 2 magnets and reed switch on tender axle and now have 4 chuffs for sound but not as good as a super chuffer tho!!

This install was quite a learning experience but loco came out super nice!!
