It's not new news, but I'm not sure it's a variable people give enough weight to. Labor costs and regulations get a lot of attention... those two items may have been primary reasons why mfg went overseas, but they're not necessarily the reason it's not coming back to the US (according to the article).
The jist of the article is that even if Steve Jobs wanted to make the Iphone in the US, he realistically couldn't... all the materials, suppliers, facilities, distribution networks, end even engineers aren't here to do it.
The same could of course be said for a lot of the trains we buy.
If this wasn't new news to you, why did you start the thread "what would it cost...?" You must've already realized it was less of a question of "how much" but more so just "how"?
