The other day I decided to run a Lionel SP Diesel with Pulmor Motor and TMCC, However, I could not remember if I ever had it out of the box?

So, before putting on the track, I removed the shell to put a couple of drops of oil on the Motor Bearing. When I went to put the shell back on, the screws were very hard to tighten, and I was afraid of twisting off the plastic standoffs.

So I thought about what I could use, and decided to add a drop of liquid dish soap to each screw, and wiped of the residual.

Wow, they went right in, and then I thought, shoot, will this be harmful to the plastic over time? Has anyone ever used this? or something else?

Appreciate your feedback,

Thanks,

In over 50 years of fiddling around with plastic shells on trains, I've discovered that if a screw is hard to tighten back into a previously threaded hole, you are probably cutting new threads in the plastic.  The trick is to place the screw back into its hole and slowly back off the screw until you feel the screw's threads reengage with the previously cut threads in the plastic.  THEN screw it back into the shell's hole.  If you are cutting new threads, you will eventually enlarge the hole so that the screw will not hold.

Using dish soap as a lubricant may not harm the plastic, but it shouldn't be necessary.  Good idea to lube the bearings before using, though.
