I'm on the fence about whether I should get the Girl's set. Simply because it's different. What are your thoughts about the set?

Yes, it definitely is a bit different, but it fits right in with most tinplate (better than it does with the regular O gauge stuff in my opinion). I already have tinplate steam locomotives in red, blue, etc., so one in pink would pretty much fit right in.
I don't plan to buy the set myself, but if I had a wife or daughter I sure might consider it.
I agree with Allan. With the bright colors of tinplate I think pink fits right in. I saw the standard gauge version at York and it did look beautiful! I think when you take a more realistic looking train and add pink that is kind of a different ball game. If I had a grand daughter right now it would be a no brainier!
Chris,
Well your not going to belive this... I'm married with three daughters and NONE of them like pink! Purple, orange, and blue are thier favorite colors. I think the pastels are neat..but thats why I like tinplate...for its fun toy factor. Still on the fence. I missed out on the celbration steamer (blue and orange) and I don't want to make the same mistake. I'll have a couple of weeks to decide.

That is surprising! No mater what I think any color in tinplate looks good or better. Milwaukee colors in scale equipment doesn't do much for me but in tinplate it looks beautiful. If I were not ordering the O gauge Red Comet Engine and cars I would have seriously thought about the girls set.
I like tinplate in bright colors and earth tones, pastels not so much.
My daughter saw it in the catalog and her eyes lit up. Once I get a personal copy, I'm going to put post-it notes in it for specific items. Then, leave it lie around for the casual glance by the CFO. Figured a parallel approach worked for Ralphie since he got his Red Ryder...
When I can get it, I like tinplate in Milwaukee Road's orange, maroon, and black paint scheme.

Same here, to put it mildly.
Being old enough, I vividly remember when the 'Lady Lionel' marketing mistake was produced for the first time. The fall of 1957 was when we American Flyer kids were gifted with the ultimate opening to inflict more than a bit of good-natured ribbing on the Lionel kids. A pink steam engine? Oh, how realistic! And, girls didn't want it.
However, to each their own.

I will be purchasing this set for my wife. For all she puts up with and her support of my hobby with the boys, its the least I can do.. It will look pretty nice Im sure. I purchased her MTH's first foray into Pink when they made the pink 408e set years ago. Its actually a stunning color and a beautiful set to see.
We were watching "Antiques Roadshow" on TV during lunch today. One of the items was an original Lionel girl's set. The appraiser put it at between $7000 - $9000.
