Hello I have the original burning switch tower from 1996. The smoke unit has stopped operating. I dont know if anyone might have a p/n for this or if there is a unit I could substitute for it. This tower has the old string unit and the smoke unit is a small tapered unit. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a Seuthe unit, I think 12V Seuthe #6, rather than the higher voltage #8.
The tower is from a little earlier than you suggest, assuming it's a 6-12768 catalog number. Those were around 1991 & 1993, if I recall correctly.
It's found in Lionel Service supplement #18 (link). Looks like the smoke unit is 610-2722-050.
I could not get the part to come up on Lionel's parts site. It is of the vintage that might have been included in a sell-off of the parts inventory to a third party. But maybe the number could help you with various parts dealers.
As Überstationmeister mentions, there is a decent chance it's a Seuthe unit.

Uberstationmeister you are correct about it being a suethe unit. Looked online at suethe units and that is what it looks like. thanks again for the help. Also thanks to Dave45681
It is the a Seuthe Unit. I’ve replaced mine twice. Jeff Kane from the Train Tender sells them on eBay. His seller ID is mr.lionel! Or, give him a call directly.
I can’t figure out how to get an eBay link into a post from my phone. Here’s the item description to search for:
