I haven't been in Salt Lake City for ages, but it appears the area now has a substantial rail transit system.

The old Union Pacific and DRGW passenger depots are interesting landmarks, close to town, but they no longer serve as stations and the tracks have been routed elsewhere.

North of Salt Lake City is Ogden, a railroad hub area.  Promontory Point, where the first transcontinental railroads met is also north of Salt Lake.  I 80 East,  up over the Wasatch Mts. out of Salt Lake has railroad on the left as you climb.  There is an interesting tourist Railroad, Heber, Utah.
