I am not looking to become a pro or drop a lot of money on a new camera, I just want to take better layout pictures with what I have now. I have a basic 10 megapixel Polaroid camera that is about 6 years old. The manual that came with it is not very well written and doesn't explain how all of the features work. I am looking for a book that is well written and will explain what the different features are for and how to use them. A Bing search for "beginners photography book" came up with over 15 million results . Can anyone recommend a good book?

Once you read this book, I would suggest his book on flash photography.

I just posted some quick pictures of my layout on the weekend photo fun.  I just used a tripod and did not use flash.  My photos were flat and did not have any depth.  At this point, I am more interested in advancing my layout.  Once I do, I'll set up lighting to take the pix.  A flash would give directional lighting and give the sense of a "sun" for your layout.  Shadows provide depth and texture that make your images look much better.  That's why I suggest the second book.

Good luck.  Photography is another great hobby.
