PS1 Chuff Rate

My MTH 4-6-0 PS1 Chuff is good at low speed but sounds like popcorn machine at elevated speeds.

I have tried reset 27 feature with z1000 but little improvement. I had to turn the chuff off its so bad.

Is the PS1 chuff feature worth messing with?
