I have an extra 180 brick from Lionel and when I was young and wreckless I cut the plug off the end and hooked it up to an MTH TIU. Somehow I didn't mark which wire was common. Does it matter? I want to hook it up to another TIU. Thanks.

No it doesn't matter unless you're going to put it together with another brick/ transformer. Then it will need to be phased with the others.

It does not matter which way you hook the wires you hook to the TIU...unless you have other transformers hooked to it. If this is the case you need to make sure all the transformers are in phase with each other.
You can figure out which is common by looking at another brick and seeing which lead is the ribbed lead on the cord. Easy to recover from this one.
