In an upcoming auction there is a listing for a set of 3 dead end passenger cars. Never heard of such a thing. anyone know what these are??

I suspect they are referring to what is known as "blind ends". A "blind" end car is a passenger or baggage car where one or both ends are not equipped with side doors, steps and/or a platform for the boarding and detraining of passengers. Many baggage, RPO's. diners, and sleepers had at least one blind end. Many cars, both heavyweight and streamlined were built this way.

No, it really doesn't! If you had looked at the detailed description, you would have seen that the three cars are "Head end" cars, namely baggage and RPOs. The listing title, "Dead end cars" was just a typo.

Very amusing. As far as I know, trains have head-end cars and tail-end or rear-end cars. But no dead end cars.
