I was wondering if anyone knew how to check that the RCMC is regulating the power to the smoke element. What voltage should I see at what setting. I have a fairly new engine that started smoking like crazy (not Necessarily bad) but smoke volume didn’t seam to change “low” was still VERY thick. Then it smelled and that was the final straw I cracked it open to find that the factor smashed a wire to one of the ground lights and that the batting in the unit was chard with a whole 5min Of runtime. The batting is what stinks and the elements need to be cleaned now but I’m worried the regulator in the RCMC might be blown. Any help is appreciated

usually is batting is charred not enough smoke fluid added also does the smoke unit still smoke if you add 30 drops of fluid? as to the smashed wire is the insulation broken where it could become in direct contact with the metal boiler? before tearing smoke unit apart try above first to verify the smoke unit is actually working if it is using remote set smoke to medium. am sure other techs will chime in as well good luck

Sorry forgot That bit of information. Yes being a new unit I always put a good hardy 30 drops. Too late it’s already apart that’s how I know it’s burnt. Like I said it was working spectacularly but so much so it was suspicious because between high, med, and low it was the same volume of smoke. The wire was definitely smashed by the factory it’s now burnt in two

ouch on the wire so next question is it under warranty? if so reinstall smoke unit and send off to lionel once they give you a RMA. if not then  I know you can verify voltage I just do not remember what pins to check it on with a volt meter.  if the RCMC board smoke circuit is dead its a non fix of that board unless other techs here know otherwise so a replacement of said RCMC board is only option and a matter of splicing the burnt wire and then using a piece of heat shrink tubing to protect that area from any more contact to anything metal.

replacing the RCMC board is not hard but you need to label the wired plugs to there appropriate connection on the board and lionel will sell you the board but without a warranty or you can send this to one of the repair techs that frequent this forum either gunrunnerjohn or alex M both are good at what they do. hope this helps you somewhat on going forward I really thought some others would have chimed in by now. you could try googling how to check voltage on a lionel rcmc you might get lucky and if you have a volt meter you will know for sure if it took the smoke unit circuit out. do you know where that severed wire goes to? that also will help a tech help you.
