I am looking to add people to my passenger cars and looking at buying little people I see there is 50 and 48 scale. Should I not look for 43 scale to fit on the little seats in the cars?? If so where can I buy some....

The 1:48 is true 'O' scale. The 1:50 would mix fine.
Sir,
I googled this.. they are good figures.. I have bought some and they work well in the cars..
If you search the forum for "sitting people" or "people for passenger cars", you'll find discussions.
The conclusion is that most of the "sitting figures" won't fit.
Most amputate the lower half of any figure and just use the torso in the seat. I also believe that the smaller figures look better because you can see the most the head through the window.
There is not one answer. You have to get a few different grab bags and experiment. Most buy the better priced Asian offerings on eBay. Perfect detail is not needed.
This has been discussed pretty frequently here. FWIW, many figures are too large for the cars. I have 1:43, 1:50, and 1:64 figures, and for the MTH Premier cars I find the 1:64 figures fit best. The 1:43 or hopelessly large, no real hope of making them look right. the 1:50 figures close, but frequently they need surgery to fit into the seats.
I can tell you with certainty that these are too large, usually too wide and tall. Some of the figures can be made to fit, some just will never fit into a single seat.

Well what of the HO scale??
1/87th too small for O passengers
I also have the HO figures, and as John just stated, they're too small. However, I use a few for children, I put them on the inside just to add a little more population to the cars. I once found 1:64 S-scale figures that were perfect, and I can't find them anymore.
One modeler took photos of family and friends, resized them and mounted them inside the windows for a personal touch. Not the same as 3D models, but an interesting idea.
Doug, first thing you need to deal with the difference between O27 and O scale. Much of what is sold is really O27 which is much closer to S scale at 1:64 than it is to O scale at 1:48 a number which also differs between British, European, and Asian definitions of O scale. In the Americas 027 at roughly S scale is dimensioned to run a O gauge track so especially in width there are additional compromises with what would be scale dimensions. So when populating passenger cars it is far simpler to use S scale's 1:64 figures.
Some interesting reading about O scale/gauge can be found here:

Whatever scale they are, the MTH RailKing figures look appropriate to me in the passenger cars...seated or standing. Got patience? You can buy 'em by the bag of 100....unpainted...fairly inexpensive. Slather on some paint while watching re-runs on TV in the man-cave....(?)
Yeah, I've had to do radical surgery on some. (I put my thumb over their face when amputating the legs....Oh!!!-scale screams are still rather unpleasant!) several have received some serious butt-abrasion....filing the bottoms/sides of the gluteus maximus to fit the seats or get the heads into a more optimum position relative to the windows. Occasionally I'll wring their necks 90 degrees to the right or left....literally! Not because they've been naughty, but because too many of them are facing straight forward....ignoring the gorgeous passing scenery I've labored so intently to provide them! (No gratitude, I tell you, even in the land of the O'Folks! Hey!.....they're getting a free ride......the least they can do is LOOK like they're enjoying the view!!!) Heh, heh, heh.
BTW...Happy Halloween!

"S" gauge figures for the MTH regular length passenger cars? Like the NCL set?
All my cars are the O-27 so the "S" scale would probably work the best...I'll look for some and try them out.. Thanks guys for all the input. I will look at MTH stuff..

They work best for my 18" Premier cars, and they also worked for the RailKing AeroTrain cars.
