I have a sd60e NS first responders lionel legacy that had a bad rcmc board. Got a new board from lionel and installed it today. In the process the wire harness that goes to the smoke unit broke.seems the wires got so stiff they broke off from the other molex connector at the other end. I have attached a photo of it. Lionel does not show this as part you can buy. Is there a tech who has one or a place where I can get one? I dont run smoke that much in my desiels, but it would be nice to have it 100% working. Thanks

Hello, did you ever get an answer for this problem with the smoke unit wire harness? I had the exact problem of not being able to locate a replacement via Lionel parts department for my CSX 6-84407 Diesel Locomotive. Kristen, with Lionel's Customer Service submitted (5) possible repair depos to no avail. Please let me know if you found a replacement harnesses and where did you locate it. Thanks, Mike
Pretty sure one could find pre-crimped wire harness for JST-ZH connectors in a 5 wire configuration for a smoke unit.
"LATTECH 12 Sets JST ZH 1.5MM 5 Pin Female & Female Double Connector with Flat Cable 150MM PIN 1 to PIN 1"
Smoke unit has the same JST-ZH 5 pin.
And those smoke units even have the pinout silkscreened right on them
We ID the RCMC exact version from the parts breakdown link https://www.lionelsupport.com/...Y-SD60M-8783-6-84407
And then we break out the RCMC guide thanks again to @Bruk https://ogrforum.com/...RSLITE%20Jan2017.pdf
Again, you may have to flip the pinout of the connector, but that is easily performed by lifting the plastic tabs to release the crimped wire connector and then inserting in the order needed.
The cables are "straight though" just unsure if the connector might be 180 degrees off and that is easy to correct.

Just in case not clear and you say the labels don't "exactly" match.
V+ is "Raw"
ELE- element is HTR Heater
FAN = FAN
COM = COM
SEN = SENS Sensor AKA thermistor

Pretty easy to fabricate one of these, just have to know what's on the other end. As Vernon points out, the pre-made cables are available, I actually stock them. But, you still have to do the opposite end, and not having one to look at, hard to know what to put there.
Those are actually JST ZH family connectors, not Molex connectors.
Vernon and Gunrunnerjohn, let me first say that I am one year new to O gauge model railroading and to this forum. This is my first post, and your support is such an appreciation to the hobby. You have provided commentary and pictorial illustrations that has taken weeks away from my searching and wondering how to answer this issue and others that would have been forthcoming, had it not been for the pictorial illustrations that Vernon provided. I will follow your lead and let you guys know how everything works out. P.S. I will need help with other issues in the near future, please feel free to comment. Thanks, Mike
We're generally a pretty friendly bunch around here Mike, welcome to the forum!
Good day fellas, I'm just getting back to the wire harness for the Lionel 6-84407 Smoke Unit. What gauge wire should I use? Also, I presently have a good working K-Line K3799-0900S VGN Allegheny #900 & Tender that I would like to upgrade to an ERR Cruise Commander and GRJ's Super Chuffer that I have been reading about. Questions: Knowing that there is no longer any factory support for the K-Line Steamer, would it be good value to do a complete ectomy of the K-Line's electronics and install the Cruise commander instead of the Cruise Commander M? Lastly, will the Super Chuffer work with either of the commanders? Thanks, Mike
gunrunner can answer all your questions he Excellent on Tmcc repairs and board repairs! I have a lot of all those connectors myself really comes in handy on Lionell and MTH repairs!
p.s welcome to the ogrforum great place for all kinds of help!
Alan
The Super-Chuffer II doesn't care what you use for motor control. The CC-M is fine, the rest of the electronics are generic Lionel stuff. You may want a Chuff-Generator to give you 4-chuffs/rev on the drivers as well. I did one of those quite a while back, I actually retained all the Railsounds electronics in the tender, just did a total upgrade of the locomotive. Mine was a sister version, and didn't have fan driven smoke, so I added that as well. Are you sure this one has fan driven smoke?

"LATTECH 12 Sets JST ZH 1.5MM 5 Pin Female & Female Double Connector with Flat Cable 150MM PIN 1 to PIN 1"
- Working temperature:85°C; Operating voltage: 80V;Working current:850mA
- Pin pitch:1.5mm
- Total length:150mm
- Wire specification:28 AWG
Again, google or search for the above named wires pre-crimped.
I don't think it's going to be a male and female cable, more likely two females.
Thanks for the quick response and all the help. GRJ, as you know I am new to O gauge railroading, so I hope this qualifies a fan driven smoke unit. While the locomotive was on and idle, I pressed #9 on the Legacy remote and I can hear what I believe is a fan motor running and it instantly began to smoke. Thank you, Alan, for welcoming me to the forum.
Sure sounds like fan driven smoke! That's good, eliminates one issue.
forgot all about my post. as to the question directed at me. no I did not get this fixed. thank john and vernon I will have to look into making this cable. now I know what to look for.
why lionel does not stock these is odd. seems when they tare apart engines for parts they would at least have a couple for sale go figure 🤔

I've noticed that many parts diagrams conveniently omit many of the harnesses, not sure why.
Hello GRJ and Vernon, getting the smoke unit up and running again for my Lionel 6-84407 was an easy fix. The info Vernon provided on locating the wire harness was spot on. Once received it was plug and play. Thanks again!
