Merry Christmas Everyone.  I do not know if what I am searching for even exists. I am looking for a New York Central hudson type 4-6-4 like the ones Lionel made in 1990, replicating the original 1937 versions of the scale hudsons. However the newer versions have lots of electronics and features i really do not want such as talk from the engine, whistles that emit smoke etc. I just want a locomotive for show that looks stupendous and can run with a regular Lionel transformer made years ago. Williams putout brass locomotives but some are short on detail. K Line has a wonderful locomotive but the 600 dollar price is more than I am willing to pay for, as I am searching for something in the 150 range. I am not adverse to a fixer upper that may need repainting but I am looking for a repairable engine that would have all of it's parts. Any ideas on where such an animal could be had?

Even a boiler shell from a 700 series, and where could I find some scullen wheels, or full cut spoke wheels, that could make such an example of a J1e class with out breaking the bank.

Thanks

A friend for life seems like a good deal to me. Thanks for the help:

If you are careful, the 1990 version can be had for under $500.  $150 will get you either junk or a friend for life.  The MTH can be had for $400, but has undersize cylinders.  The Bachmann is rumored to be a good deal at $300.  Have not seen one.  Sorry for the bad news.

Great advice and photos, the MTH unit certainly fills the bill:

Keep an eye out for an early MTH Premier Hudson, the MT-3020LP...  Its a PS1 unit, so it's perfect for transformer-controlled operation...

Some good pictures here...

I used to want one, but I used the DD Equalizer for something else.

If you want to pay a little more, then you can look on the MTH website for a 20-3020-1.

Good luck...

Thanks,

Mario
