Smoke Unit Modification

Lots of stuff you can do to these.  Drill out the intake hole, I typically shoot for 1/4".  Enlarge the stack hole as much as possible, that's usually a lot less.  Repack with the new Lionel wick.  Make sure there is airflow from the fan chamber over the smoke resistor to the stack.

You'll also want to make sure the regulator is set to maximum smoke.

AUX1, AUX2, 9 H, then AUX2 again to save the setting.  This sets the smoke volume to high.   

The L,M,H, buttons are the momentum buttons under the cover, they also select smoke volume using the above key sequence.

What John has described above is essentially the fix Lionel (in the person of Mike Reagan) recommended a couple of years ago for smoke units of the period your engine is from. The video instructions for this are on YouTube here:

Thanks guys, I knew it had been discussed but I was getting very frustrated trying to find it.  My engine smokes "ok" but I wanted to have the knowledge in the "wings" so to speak.  JIC I wanted to improve things a little.  Help very much appreciated.

That modification will make a huge improvement on the volume of smoke. When you replace the wick, soak it well and take note of how much fluid it will actually hold.
