I have Lionel Legacy MR 261 S3, item#611229.  The smoke unit will not turn off or turn on properly with Legacy remote.  I have to push the On Button multiple times on the remote until it will turn on or push the turn Off Button multiple times before it will turn off.  The Legacy remote says smoke is on Low, Medium, or High, but the smoke will not turn on or if try to push the Smoke Off button on the remote, the remote will say that the smoke is off, but smoke unit is still on. Sometimes, I can't even get the Smoke On/Smoke Off buttons on remote to work at all.

Troubleshooting Steps I have done so far….

-I have checked the Legacy Remote.  The Smoke On/Off buttons work properly with my other Legacy engines.

-I have done a factory reset by re-programming the engine with Legacy Remote but that does not fix the problem.

-All other Legacy features work properly on the engine from the Legacy Remote…lights, crewtalk etc.

-I can turn off the smoke unit from the On/Off switch on the engine itself.

I have determined the Legacy Remote is not the problem according to steps I did above.  What could be the cause of this problem?  I am hesitant to remove the shell from this engine because of hearing about the difficulty that others have said about removing it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Ken

Try re programming the engine to a different ID, and see if the smoke functions work properly using a different ID#. If they do, then switch back to it's original engine ID and see if they still work.

Also see if you can turn the smoke unit on and off in Cab 1 mode instead of Legacy mode.

Last night I did switch the engine ID, but that did not solve the problem.  I will try to switch to Cab 1 mode tonight and see what that does.  Thank you for your response.

Last night, I tried the engine in TMCC mode.  I was able to turn On/Off the smoke unit with the Legacy remote.  I heard the “Let-off sound” when turning ON or Off the smoke unit.  In email, with Jon he said it was the radio board in the engine that is causing the problem.  Thanks for the help.
