The Golden Gate Depot Southern cars were a set of coaches (1000 series, I think) that were in the later block lettering and numbers. Would work well for a 1940s - 50s era train or excursion cars.
Here is a video of the Green Kanawha Version with Southern on the tender. This one is from the 2010 run with the wireless drawbar and Proto 2. My suspicion is MTH will be making these again soon with Proto 3.

Do you have the MTH item number for this?

It's this one but the artwork on MTH's website is incorrect with the number on the tender. It's says Southern on the tender just like in the above video.
see still no Green Gold with number on tender. only the black one

I finally woke-up this morning with my brain engaged!
The problem here is that the MTH web-site artwork in incorrect. This fantasy GREEN kanawha is suppose to be a passenger engine. And to the best of my recollection,at least after going to green passenger engines, all passenger engines did have "SOUTHERN" or in case "CRESCENT LIMITED"etc. spelled out on their tenders.
So if this engine (Kanawha) would have been prototypical "SOUTHERN" would have been spelled out on the tender sides.
Now that I am fed, coffeed , etc. pulled two volumes from my RR library. Namely "Southern Railway Steam Train Volume 1-Passenger" by Tillotson and "Southern Railway Through Passenger Service in Color" by Stout.
In all photos of passenger engines Southern, Crescent Limited, etc. was spelled out not a road number.
Now an interesting thing seen in "in Color" were pictures of Business Cars 3, 11, and 22 where they had a golden color pinstripe along the bottom. Also it appeared say again appeared these cars had a shade of green pinstripe above and/or below the windows.?! Also saw a few rebuilt heavyweights passenger cars that had the bottom golden pinstripe. Maybe some of this was just the lighting, but think not. Maybe Larry will see this and chime in here.

This has been a great thread with good info. Thanks guys. I think with my Christmas bonus I’m going back to Jeff to grab that 4501. After watching the documentary and reading so much history I feel she deserves a place on my track and shelf
