I think the 4501 would be a best seller if it was used with this tooling:

It's the only known tooling that's accurate to 4501 in O-Scale.  It would also need a new frame that supports the 4-wheel tender trucks.

You are right, this tooling, make by Mike Wolf for Lionel in 1992. Most companies use a WWI light mikado pattern, but 4501 qas built in 1911. This Lionel model came with 4 wheel tender trucks, so don't know why it needs a new frame. I need to get a second one of these to paint black. Unfortunately I do not think Lionel may have access to this tooling now, not sure who would, have it if not destroyed.

here's the photo of my Railking green Southern NW-2 and bay window caboose sitting on the track waiting for some switches needed to complete the track plan !   PURE SOUTHERN style !!!   My daddy was born in the South in 1913.   Guys, since the engine was made in 1999 Korea and the caboose in 2013 China.    It is really surprising that the shade of green paint matches perfectly 18 years apart ( purchased both in 2016) !!!!

I really like that NW2!!   I'm ordering the Lionel LC+ version of it as soon as the blue tooth version comes out.  If they make it that way.   If not just without blue tooth.

Its ok folks.   Since none of you could or would answer what this covered load is or could be.   I took the next step and called the friendly folks at Lionel.  It is a .................................. COVERED LOAD!!!   LOL  Other Southern rolling stock I have is a green and white painted Lionel crane (yes I like it)  and a Southern bay window caboose L.C.C.A edition from the July 23rd, 1977 meeting in Cincinnati Ohio.   Someone else had posted a long time ago that they had a green/white Southern crane and "RED" flatcar that they didn't want.   I'm going to look back and see if I can find the post and reply to it.   I would want it!

Years back when I was doing local shows I was in Charlotte when a guy asked me if I knew of any Green & "White" Southern cabooses.  I told him that some of the O-gauge makers made them, but they were NOT prototypical but Black & "white" was.  He told he did not care about prototypical he had green & white train that he want a caboose to match!

This was somewhat eye opening.  When MTH brought out a 120 ton green & white crane I jumped on it thinking MTH would never get the color correct. A few years later they did.  So then brought their black & "white" version thinking some day to sell the green & white one.

Will recently displayed at a couple local shows with this piece.  NOT a look.  Local toy train store owner is also surprised.

My post here on the "Sell" board.?

If you still have this.    Id like to have it!

Hello CARSNTRAINS..........

I believe lionel does make a black and white "Southern" LC  NW-2 but has a single motor I think in the front.  You might want to check out Ebay.  I don't think there was a green version of the lionel NW-2.

If you go to their website it shows a two motor green and white NW3 in Lion Chief Plus!   With smoke, sound, electro couplers, and flywheel speed control!

In case you'd like to read some first person accounts of working for the Southern you might want to get a copy of this book.   My only connection with the book is the fact that I own a copy.  To give you some idea of the writing style I've included a brief quote in this post.

Southern_RR_Rem

"At the Alexandria Station the main line tracks separated into freight train tracks and passenger train tracks.  The freight tracks, behind the northbound passenger waiting room, went into Potomac Yard.  One morning a southbound train stopped right in front of the passenger sheds to wait for clearance. From the Alexandria station past Duke Street was a long curve, and incoming freight trains had a signal just before they got to the Duke Street Bridge.  Because of the curve, northbound engineers had to depend on their firemen to let them know whether or not the signal was clear.   An RF&P freight was coming in, and when it got close to the curve the engineer asked his fireman how the signal was.

The fireman replied," I can't see the signal for that caboose is blocking my view."  The engineer threw the brakes into emergency-too late! He rammed the Southern caboose and stood it on end.  The flagman saw him coming in time to get out of the way. He took off down Duke Street.  Someone stopped him and asked why he was in such a hurry.  He pointed back toward the bridge; the caboose was on fire, and flames were going high above the bridge.  Fortunately, the Southern conductor had already started walking to the front of his train when the train struck so no one was injured.  There were some hard feelings however.  The conductor had bought a couple of hams in Monroe and left them on the caboose.  By the time he got back to what was left of the caboose, his hams were cooked well done."

THATS A GREAT LOOKING LINEUP!!!!!

I love mine too - I only have the legacy 1393 and TMCC 1403.

I would love to have a Weaver Tennessean 4-6-2 - I'll keep looking to find one at the right price.

I have been begging/harrassing Scott Mann to make the Tennessean streamlined cars for both fans of the N&W J and the Southern too. One thing I would have to love have seen a photo of was in Monroe, VA where the Southern Streamlined PS4 from Washington DC would handoff the Tennessean to an N&W J for the run to Roanoke and Bristol where she would be given back to Southern.

Maybe if a few us kept on asking him he may see there is interest. I think it's a straightforward set to make - most of the cars except the observation are Pullman standard designs common to other railroads.  I keep hoping one day!!

Lionel89...Fine roster of Southern PS-4 engines!  I have 3 MTH PS-4's and Lionel Legacy PS-4.  You lucky to find Weaver Southern Tennessean!  I saw your post several months ago that you were looking for one.  Does it have ProtoSounds 2 or 3 or TMCC?  I saw one go up for auction on the bay this last weekend for $1300.  The passenger cars would be nice from Scott but I would have hold off for now...maybe in a few years when my daughter is out of college!

Thank you kjs.  I have also seen the pictures you have posted of your impressive SRR roster.  Right now, it only has Protosounds; however, I am giving it to gunrunnerjohn at York to do a complete overhaul...TMCC, sound, smoke.  I would have to hold off on the cars, too.  There are so many Southern items being made right now.  I just paid for the 3rd Rail SRR E8s I reserved.

Yes, the original PS class Pacifics were black originally. The famous green was debuted in 1927 on the locomotives, same time of the two-tone green cars. That is why MTH offered them in both colors last year.

Passenger steam stayed green until they were retired in the late 40s - early 50s. Southern officially completely dieselized in 1953, long before they went back to black in 1958.

4501 is now black since it was a freight locomotive in regular service, and TVRM chose to restore her back into that livery.
