I'm loving it but.... the usual stick yer nose in.... I would pick an era for the vehicles (9145 thru 1956) and then put figures in those vehicles. You've gone this far with such success, why not polish it up? Just my opinion.

Alan, these are really great!! I can virtually hear those trains rumbling over the streets just like when I was a kid in NYC and Brooklyn. I probably missed the post at some earlier point, but I'd love to know what you used for all the structural elements of the "EL." Everything looks very realistic and first-rate. Thanks, Alan.

Jack...I am not even close to being done. This is just an update thus the title of the thread. I have over 300 vehicles on the layout of all eras and I do agree that I need to arrange them in 10 year or so groups. I just wanted to get them out of their boxes and populate the streets for the pictures. I have started to put drivers in them...first the easy ones like the drop tops.

Jerrman...The components are a mixture of plastic, wood, and foam core. The plastic and wood pieces were cut out using a CNC machine. The pattern was based on early elevated structure. The groove at the top of the truss beam was planned to attach walkways but now I am not sure I will be installing them...at least not everywhere.

As another NYC boy, born and raise, I remember the El trains very well. You've done a fantastic job of capturing the look and feel of Manhattan in the 40's & 50's.
If you were modeling the old Third Ave El, the only thing missing would be the trolley/street car tracks that ran underneath the El.
Thanks for bringing back a fond childhood memory.

I feel like I am walking up White Plains Rd under the El in the Bronx in the 60s. The effect is spectacular and breathtaking. I am speechless!

GREAT STUFF! The realism is top notch... Some of the "driverless" cars are a little erie. I have been wondering what to do about that on my layout.

Peter....thanks!...I am glad that the scenes bring back those memories!!

Michael...appreciate the compliment... Some of the cars are parked but many are going down the street. I have drivers in about 10 percent of them now but need many more!! Just don't know where to get a couple of hundred sitting people that have arms that can be adjusted to look like they are driving. Any suggestions are certainly welcome!!

Alan, quick question...   what did you use for the steps coming down from the EL?  Did you purchase or scratch build them?

Walter...those are Lionel pedestrian crossing bridges that I modified by cutting and adjusting for the purpose.  Although in this set of pictures I don't show them, I also have steps that I have scratch built from evergreen and plastruct parts.  Those go up to switch towers from street level.
