.... but I did write a lot of COBOL code back in another life.....

Hmmmm.....  I remember having a different life like that with Assembly language, and Cobol, and Fortran, and PL/1, and Algol 60, and then I decided not to go into a computer science career.....

BTW, everything is much improved on the home PC both visually and functionally.  But on the Kindle Fire which is what I use when traveling --> still has no visible or functioning tool bar - just a blue band and none of the tool bar on posting / replying to posts....

I have a strange solution to one problem. In Firefox 42 I went to Tools/Options/Content/Colors. Changed the override to always. Now all my forum visits are highlighted-posts, topics, menu bar. But, and I mean but, the colors are gone from the Firefox options box where I originally changed it. It's all black and white, no colors in the option block. I also have nothing but white background as I am typing this. Menu Bar is only blue type, as are screen names. Ads are all colors and so are some posted pictures. Bottom Menu Bar is blue with white letters. If someone could tell me how to do a screen shot, I could demonstrate. So I have highlighted visits, but lost a lot. Other web sites seem similar. I don't know if this will help fix the problem, but I am just offering it in case it helps get it back like it used to be.

David, are you using an iPhone 4 or a 4S? It could make a difference.

Rich, just a basic iPhone 4.  Do you think that's too old a device to be compatible with this new forum software?

For the record, I ran into another glitch on the iPhone4 today too.  When I looked at Mike Reagan's response to a question I posed in the "Ask Mike" thread, he included a PDF attachment.  When I tapped on it expecting it to open, nothing happened.  Interestingly, when I clicked on the "Hide Attachment" button, the attachment disappeared and was replaced with a "Show Attachment" button.  However, when I tapped on that button, I couldn't get anything else to work on that page.  Seemed to freeze up solid.  My only option was to hit the "back" arrow in the browser.  That got me back to where I could do something with Safari again.

BTW, on my Mac desktop, when I click on the PDF attachment, it is saved immediately to my downloads folder.  I'm pretty sure with the old software, it would open the PDF using Adobe Reader... and that's what typically happens by default with other web applications.  Sometimes I'm presented with a screen with two options:  open with Adobe Reader, or save the file to disk.  Never got that option here... it just downloaded the attachment to disk after clicking on the attachment filename in the post.

THAT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE!

Hoopla Version 2 is a major upgrade to this forum software. The upgrade will change this forum to a "Responsive Design" which means it RESPONDS to the screen size you are using to view the forum and displays the pages properly on your smaller device. Using the forum on smaller tablets and phones will become MUCH easier.

NICE!  Eexcept for the hard to read blue letters on a blue background.

I like the new forum, the only problem I have & I had it with the old version is when I click on first unread post I don't always get the first unread post & have to scroll up to find the first one.  This happens mainly on a new post & it will go to the last post instead of the first post, & when it is an old topic & a new post shows up.  When that happens it will go to a post that may of been posted in January instead of today.  I read the forum every day so that should not cause the probleml

Any help would be appreciated

This is the way it's supposed to work. When you click on a thread in the Recent Posts list, it will take you to the most recent post in that thread. It has been that way since day 1.

Rich,

You've made terrific progress with the adjustments, thank you! I do have a question about posting pictures. When I post from my iPad 3, unless my picture is very small (anything under 1.5MB) it just says uploading..., when I post a 4MB picture from my Macbook Pro, it loads immediately. Can you ask Hoopla if this is a known issue?

Thanks,

Andy

I don't know if an iPhone 4 is too old or not. I'll ask the Hoopla guys. I will also run that PDF scenario by them. What you have described doesn't sound right.

EDIT

Thanks Rich.  I noticed a similar glitch using my iPad (2nd generation).  I was able to toggle the hide/show attachment button just fine, but nothing happens when I click on the attachment itself.  Pretty certain I could view a PDF attachment with the older version of forum sofware.

Anybody else running into this?  Check out Trainworld's "Ask Mike Reagan" thread, and see his answer to my question about 18" aluminum passenger cars.

Try clicking on the NEW in the forum index next to the thread, it'll take you to the last unread post as you expect.  If you click on the title, it takes you to the first post in the thread.  AFIAK, that always worked that way.

Rich,

Any way to add the forum that each RECENT POST is in, so it would look like this?

THE FORUM UPGRADE

1 minute ago [in the Hi-Rail, O27 and Traditional 3-Rail O Gauge Forum]

That would be very helpful and probably just needs a field added in the Recent posts subroutine...

Ed

Fingers Crossed.......

Still hoping.....

Rich, Any chance of this happening?

There should be a widget for Recent Posts.  Seems like adding a variable that stores forum name would do it.  The variable would be near where the Topic Title is stored....

This is where it happens.... in a widget (subroutine) named "widget h-forum-topics-widget"

   <aside class="h-widget-section">
        <div id="widgetSection">
          <div id="widget_46059622109215640" class="widget h-forum-topics-widget">

    <header class="widget-header">

    <div class="small-font h-widget-body">

David, I just successfully downloaded that PDF on my iPad 2. It behaved exactly as I expected it to, offering me the option to open it in iBooks or Goodreader, which is another app I have on my IPad for managing PDF files.

I also tried this on my wife's old iPad 1 and it worked OK there, too. A little slower, but it worked.

Hmmm... interesting and puzzling... I don't have anything like iBooks or Goodreader loaded on my iPad -- just whatever Apple includes to support viewing PDF files.  I've kept the iPad fairly vanilla.  So I will double-check the iOS level I'm running... may be V7.x or something and I see iOS 9.x is more "current".  Perhaps that has something to do with it?   Will post any change of status here later tonight.

Did did you find on the iPad1 it was slow to refresh and sluggish when scrolling down a long posting? I also have an iPad mini and everything is fine for a later model.

Also, with the early generation iPad I found that when I pressed 'take action' it just throws me totally off the forum. Is this something that members using older iPads are going to have to accept or is it something Hoopla can have a look at?

WHY am I getting all these individual reply messages?  All I want is a daily digest!

Go to your profile and change your email preferences to Daily Digest. This is not something that I can do nor is it something that has anything to do with this upgrade.

I did not see either of these behaviors on the old iPad 1. EVERYTHING was slower on it, which is to be expected. However, everything worked OK.

The iPad I have has an OS of 5.1.1 which is the last available one for this model. The slowness on it was not on the old version of the forum and everything else I go to is still OK.

If I use the post reply button that is fine, just the take action it has a hissy with. I can just flip between the two when needed.

Rich - while I'm still getting used to the 'new' forum layout, I think it is an improvement (at least as viewed on my Mac computer monitor).  I do have a couple of suggestions for you to consider - one thing the old forum version had was a change in the font color for the titles of posts already viewed.  I find/found that to be useful, especially if I was tracking posts that are of interest and wanted to see what new information had been added.  It made it easier to pick out those posts I had already opened.

A second observation/suggestion - the 'Recent posts' column on the right hand side of the screen takes up a lot of real estate width-wise.  On my monitor (12.25 " high x 21.75 " wide) its about 1/3 of the screen.  I don't remember the previous version taking up that much of the width.  Since the post titles already wrap to the next line, you could consider making the column narrower, as there is a fair amount of vertical space between the entries.  Maybe this is something within my control?  If so, I don't know how to adjust it.
