Then there is something wrong with your phone.

It works fine for me on an old IPhone 4 running IOS 7.0.6. It's also OK on an iPhone 6 running IOS 8.4.

I strictly do the forum on a real computer, trying to deal with a tiny phone screen is just too painful for any long term enjoyment.  In addition, how could I type decent sized replies using a glass keyboard.

I have a smart phone / iPhone and I use it for the forum as a "Read Only" - I have never signed in on my smart phone. I do come to check out the ad banner to see what is up and even for shopping.

When it come times to buy or reply, I need a real computer. In my case it is MacBook Pro / 13 inch with the latest operating system. (OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11)

At this point and time, The New Forum is working out, Congrats to Rich.

John, the freeze-up also happens to me on a Samsuing Galaxy Note 10" tablet.  I posted a request for advice over on the forum tech thread but no one has answered.  When I try to scroll a page, of a sudden the scrolling stops dead and after a few seconds tablet jumps to the tablet home page.  Doesn't do it on any other websites.  Forum is not accessible as a result.

I have submitted this to Hoopla Tech Support.

Not sure this is possible or if it was even the case in the older software...

When I copy from a website some text for a part number, for instance the LCS SER2 I copied the title of the page because it had all the info I wanted...see below.

6-81326 LCS Serial Converter 2 (SER2)  This was typed out and this line retained the format.

Unfortunately the text is formatted as it was on the LCS page from Lionel's site.  Is there a way as an option or just within the current platform to have this inserted using the current text setting I am using to compose my post as below without retyping it all out?  I suspect I could use the source code option but was hoping there is an easy way to manage this.

Thanks  The forum upgrade is really looking good!

Click on the <> in the reply box toolbar, you can remove the text attributes that specify that paste as a header.  When you click on the <>, you get to tinker with all the formatting codes.  In the older forum software, it was the HTML edit tool, same functionality.

Thanks John, I was hoping it could be something like word where you could paste without formatting.  I pretty much figured I could do it in the source code link.  Oh well.

Exactly the same thing happens to me on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

If you use <SHIFT CONTROL-V> when you paste, it will  paste without formatting. This is true ANYTIME and ANYWHERE you use the <CNTRL-V> paste function, n ot just this forum. Adding the SHIFT key to the command will allow it to paste w/o formatting, like this:

Pasted with CONTROL-V:

6-81326 LCS Serial Converter 2 (SER2)  This was typed out and this line retained the format.

Still using a non smart flip phone, no tablets, and I guess it will take me time to adjust to the new format. Right now I don't like it as it is change. Change means more time  to spend how to use it. I like leaving well enough alone. But I can learn over time to use the site against my desires.

Well you learn something new every day.  Thanks Rich!

Just a FYI I was not able to see the video from Tinplate/”Got trains running - 4 short videos:.
I m using Windows 8 on a work station with Google chrome Saw the text but the videos were black not there, the small thumb nails on the bottom showed the picture of the video but not the ply part.
I then went to Firefox and all worked as advertised. Hope this helps.

What you are going thru is a difficult task to work in all variations of phone/tablets/PC’s/browser’s, everyone who tries this change is going thru the same thing I also read about this problem about 2 months ago. Your doing a great job.

You can't get to recent posts at all on my phone, which I'm pretty sure is a Galaxy 5. There's no "go to the desktop page" option like any other site I go to on my phone.

Coupled with difficulty navigating the desktop version as well and extra steps needed, I'm left with no other choice but to find another model train site that is easier to deal with. I'll no longer be on this site very much, 100% related to the upgrade.

I used to love coming here, but it's either impossible or takes forever to see the stuff I used to like looking at.

Lee, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head.  I can easily say that there've been several times I would have reached for my iPhone to browse the forum, but then I thought, "Why go through the hassle?".  So my usage is definitely down when I'm out and about.

On the desktop side, Rich has done a lot to at least make the site "usable" as compared to how Hoopla delivered the "software update".  Had things remained as they were last Wednesday afternoon,  I'd be long gone altogether by now.

Our little corner of the world is pretty small. Yet we've experienced TWO website modifications -- this one and Lionel's -- in recent months where the resulting impact to the end user has been unacceptable.    Makes me wonder where/why the huge disconnect exists.

The ironic part of all this is, the software update was reportedly done to make usage on mobile devices MUCH easier.  For me, it's had the exact opposite effect.

Here's my overall assessment of the "update"...

As delivered when the switch went live:  F

Current iPhone environment:  D

Current iPad environment: C-

Current Desktop environment (Mac w/Firefox):  B+

Rich's efforts to salvage this fiasco of a software uodate: A+++

David

P.S. Even as I type this post, I know there are type-o's, but I can't position the cursor on my iPad to fix them.  When I try, the screen jumps to somewhere in the text I quoted from Lee's post!!!  Very frustrating to say the least.

I agree 100% with your grade, especially Rich's efforts to fix the stuff. That's what makes it so sad for me, that he's had to go through all that work, and for what?

I have an iPhone4. Everything seems to work fine. I even posted a picture for the first time in the early update and that worked. There is no recent posts column, but I probably couldn't read it if it was there. I can still get to any forum, anyway. Everything else works. And if it didn't, the world is probably not going to end before I get to my computer. As to a couple more steps to navigate, it's moving your finger, not your feet. I have a big THANKS for Rich and his team. There are crises and inconveniences everywhere, but take a guess which category all this falls into.

Not an issue for OGR and most users,   but something that HoopLa ought to keep in mind - the "upgrades" don't run under IE9.

Duly noted that support for IE9 is ending.

AND wiithout debating browsers and what is best, it is worth noting that in some (many?) enterprise operations group policy is enforced at a corporate level for security reasons.

What that means is that in some shops it is likely that folks can't simply download Firefox or Chrome but are forced to use IE by group policy.    This same IT policy also limits upgrades and prevents/blocks "users" from downloading newer (or older) release of software unless they have ADMIN rights for the machine.

Just making note of this... and not trying to get into non-train-related debate over "internet exploder".

That's something I didn't know Rich, THANKS!  That will be a very useful shortcut for stuff like this.

I typically read the Forum by going to the Recent Posts list on the right side of the page. When I click on a thread, it takes me to the end of that thread, just like it did before the upgrade. I understand why that is and that is fine.

However, I would then click my back button and I would be brought back to the spot in the Recent Posts list I was previously, but with the upgrade the page goes to the bottom of the previous thread I was looking out. So I then have to scroll up or down the Recent Posts list to find out where I left off. Any way to stop it from going to the last post in the previous thread and just bring me back to where I was on the previous page.

Rich,

I am using an iPad2. The banner ads on the very top of the page are cut off on the right hand side. Is this a common issue or unique to me? I've tried making the Paige display smallerwith finger swipes but no luck. Also the status and search tool do not display on the very right side as well.  Anything I can do to fix this problem?

thanks,

Ed

It is not unique to you. I have the same problems on my iPad2.

I have posted this to Hoopla Tech Support.

Rich,

Any way to add the forum that each RECENT POST is in, so it would look like this?

THE FORUM UPGRADE

1 minute ago [in the Hi-Rail, O27 and Traditional 3-Rail O Gauge Forum]

That would be very helpful and probably just needs a field added in the Recent posts subroutine...

Ed

Fingers Crossed.......

Still hoping.....

Rich, Any chance of this happening?

There should be a widget for Recent Posts.  Seems like adding a variable that stores forum name would do it.  The variable would be near where the Topic Title is stored....

This is where it happens.... in a widget (subroutine) named "widget h-forum-topics-widget"

   <aside class="h-widget-section">
        <div id="widgetSection">
          <div id="widget_46059622109215640" class="widget h-forum-topics-widget">

    <div class="small-font h-widget-body">
          <div class="line-item margin-bottom-15 h-widget-topic-row"><div class="row">
    <div class="small-12 columns text-left break-word">

Ed

Rich,

Any chance this will happen?  You responded to many others after my request(s) but I have seen no reply from you to my request.  If you're not going to attempt this one, I would appreciate a response indicating that.  No offense intended, just hoping for some kind of response - you seem to respond to others'

A perfect example: you see a post about a specific locomotive. You have that loco, and are interested in hear what other have to say about it.  You click on the Recent Post only to discover it's for sale, not for discussion... and I think we are not supposed to put For Sale in the post's title.

Hoping to hear......

Ed

My apologies, Ed. I have not responded to this because I don't know how. I don't fully understand the code example you posted. Obviously it came from the "Recent Posts" widget and I see some familiar things in there, but when you get beyond the very basic admin tools that I have available in my admin interface, I'm at the edge of my knowledge envelope. I have a very frail understanding of css and really don't know how to modify it.

I know what a "variable" is - I use them all the time in the custom Filemaker Pro 13 coding I do. But I don't know how to create and use one in this context.

Obviously I am going to have to hire a css developer to look into these issues and make some changes. Hoopla has provided a slot in the back end where I can enter css that will override css contained elsewhere, so I know WHERE to make these changes, I just don't know HOW.

That's very puzzling, John.  Because today, accessing the forum from my iPhone4 became even more challenging for me.  In fact, I can't do ANYTHING on the OGR Forum from my iPhone4 now.  And I haven't even tried updating the firmware yet.  It's the same phone I've been using for a couple of years now.

I can access the OGR main website's home page OK (among many other sites too) with my iPhone.  But if I click on the "forum" link on the OGR home page, or if I enter https://ogrforum.com as the URL directly, all I get is a blank white screen (where as recent as yesterday I would at least be able to view an index of topics.  It's not frozen... it's just blank now.  Zip... zilch... nada content.
