David, there has to be something wrong with your phone. My wife has an iPhone 4 (just a 4, not a 4S) running IOS version 7.0.6 and it works fine on this forum.  Well...as "fine" as it can be on that tiny screen.

Clear the history and web data in Safari. That may do it. That has caused me problems in the past. Too many cookies and too much web data stored in the phone really slowed it down.

I thought  for sure my first post to this thread may have been deleted for "lack of enthusiasm" as it wasn't all positive, lol.  Hard to "walk the line" and still convey passion and frustration. No big deal, sorry Rich. You likely read it, and that's plenty enough for me. Thanks for that.

There was  an intention to help out in there too.

After reviewing the new  e-mail options, and notification settings, and seeing the new additon of an "edited" notification added and checked, I have to assume either that new function isn't actually working, at least not the way I expected/understood it, or it wasn't used by the moderator, or my post "didn't take".

I assume it wasn't sent, because I didn't get that "edited" alert or e-mail, and the first post did appear for a second or two. So I suspect a deletion without a notification. By human, or glitch, there was an omission.

More disappointment, sigh...  either way really. But I felt the new option is a very good one, and this info, just might help you make it work right, if its not working now. Even just "if", and skipping the "why" of an edit, would be helpful.

Beats deletion inquisitions! No?....Chow!

Rich, many thanks for that suggestion.  I should have thought of that!!!    I do it from time to time on my iPad, but never thought about it on my iPhone4.

I'm back to where I can at least browse the forum with my iPhone.  But I still can't view that PDF attachment in Mike R's response to my question.  (Not to worry though, as I've viewed it on my desktop.)  Making progress.  One of these days I may tackle an iOS update on this phone.  Or by that time, I may just get the iPhone 6-plus that I've been thinking about.  But first I need to ensure that phone will communicate nicely with my car's hands-free system (which my old iPhone4 does just fine)!!!     Uggghhhhh... welcome to mobile device compatibility in 2015.

Thanks again for the suggestion(s).

David

Hey David, glad you're up and running at least to read the forum.

Couple things:  I just got on with my iPhone 6 again and opened the .pdf in that thread you mentioned.   It opens in "iBooks" on my 6.  Again, this may be an OS update issue for you.

As far as the 6 playing nicely with your car: I went from a 4S to a 6 when the 6 came out and had no connectivity issues.  Granted I installed an aftermarket system, but the head unit and iPhone just see each other as another Bluetooth pair.   All my phone functions from music (ipod mode), Pandora, hand free calling, etc. work just fine, As they did with my 4S.   I think you'd like the 6 Plus given it's larger screen and your photography.

As it stands I am finding no problems with this forum on the iPhone 6.

On a windows desktop. The tab is now barely visible color wise. Used to use a phone a lot, and change to the full website version if needed, but now the phone version has gotten to where we hardly use it at all. When Microsoft went from Windows 7 to Windows 8 most computer folks I know wondered how it could ever have gotten past the "This is a disaster!" stage to full release. Keep tryin' for us Rich

Is there still a way to access the full version on a phone?

One little glitch I see.  If you have subscribed to a thread, you get an email with a link that is titled, VIEW THIS REPLY.  That used to take you to the reply, but when I click it now, it takes me to the thread start, not the post I'm interested in.  Any chance this can be fixed, or is it some setting I've missed somewhere?

John,

I just tried the "View This Reply" link which I had never used before.  I always just clicked on the thread title.  It brought me to the reply it was supposed to.  This is on Chrome Version 46.0.2490.86 m under Windows 10 Threshold 2.

Don't ya just luv inconsistent behavior!

I just tried to post a picture with my iPhone4. Got all the way through, but could not finish in File Chooser. I couldn't scroll enough to tap the "Finished" button. Every time i tapped all I got was the Bookmark popup. Horizontally I couldn't scroll at all. If I made it smaller, the screen just popped back to where I couldn't tap the "Finished" button. I could X out, but then lost everything. I tried twice before I gave up. I'm pretty sure I can post a message; just can't add a picture. Any thoughts on this?

Okay, after using the new format a while I have no problems with it.  However, there are two things missing that I really liked in the old format.

First issue is something I have already brought up:  In the Recent Posts column on the right side, it used to have a generic avatar for a person that did not want to post a photo of themselves.  You could run the cursor over the generic avatar and see who did the original post without opening it up.  Great for screening posts.

Second issue:  Again in the Recent Posts column, in the old format if you clicked on a link to open the topic the link would change color to indicate you had opened it.  Great for seeing which posts you have already read and a quick way to see where you are when going down the Recent Posts column after a couple of days off the forum.

My apologies, Ed. I have not responded to this because I don't know how. I don't fully understand the code example you posted. Obviously it came from the "Recent Posts" widget and I see some familiar things in there, but when you get beyond the very basic admin tools that I have available in my admin interface, I'm at the edge of my knowledge envelope. I have a very frail understanding of css and really don't know how to modify it.

I know what a "variable" is - I use them all the time in the custom Filemaker Pro 13 coding I do. But I don't know how to create and use one in this context.

Obviously I am going to have to hire a css developer to look into these issues and make some changes. Hoopla has provided a slot in the back end where I can enter css that will override css contained elsewhere, so I know WHERE to make these changes, I just don't know HOW.

Thanks Rich,

I'm about at the same place css-wise.  I have a feeling that the variable that stores which forum a post is in already exists (like the topic title, date of last post, etc.) The tricky part is finding out what it is!

I have noticed in my css work in Wordpress, the other issue is that when an auto-update is sent to the server by the designers, it sometimes changes back some of the changes you've made!

The other changes you have made are surely an improvement over the original update, Thanks,

Ed

FIRST ISSUE - I have made this suggestion to Hoopla Tech Support. They are considering it.

SECOND ISSUE - This was not built into this version of Hoopla. It seems it is becoming less popular on the Internet to do this.  I am trying to find where to add some customs css that would do this.

As of now there are two small issues I'm still dealing with. Mac OSX 10.6, Safari 5.1.10 (my laptop here is 5 weeks too old to be upgraded any further than this OS)

There is still a lack of a next or previous button on the main pages of each forum, only the numbered page links to move to the next page of topics.  It's not a big deal, but just odd as having those buttons seems to be common practice throughout the net, and as well on every other part of this site.

The second issue was mentioned by someone else above, but I don't think the point came through clearly.  When clicking on the link to go to 'first unread post' about 2/3 of the time it goes to the top of the page of that post, rather than to the post it's self.  The old forum did this once in a while, but now it happens more often than not, leaving me to have to skim through a lot of posts on longer threads to find where I left off.

Not sure if these are things that can be fixed, or if they are just specific to me.

John, can you give me the details here? Hoopla wants to know.

Device type (computer, tablet, phone?) OS, specific URL where this happened, etc. Maybe copy and past the link text from the email here? (DON'T USE SHIFT-CONTROL-V on this one, though. We WANT it to come in with the formatting and the link.) Give me as much info as you can provide.

It is not supposed to do what it did for you. The VIEW THIS REPLY link should always take you to that specific reply, not to the top of the thread.

Rich, as John mentions here, this also happens to me on both iMac, Macbook pro and PC.   IE, Safari, and my default Firefox.

Whether cache is not cleared or is cleared.   I am batting about .500 when clicking "first unread post."    Half th etime it works, the other half it takes me to start of topic.   It happened infrequently on the previous version of the Hoop.la software.

of course, now that I want to show you it doesn't do it....

Rich, here's a bit more info regarding my iPad's inability to open a PDF attachment here on the forum.

iPad 2nd generation, iOS V7.1.1

When I click on the attachment link, nothing happens at all.  For grins, I tried looking at the printer-friendly window of the post.  This time when clicking on the link, another browser tab opens, then i get an error msg, "Safari can't download this file".

On other websites, if I click on a PDF link, a new browser window opens and the PDF displays without any issue.  Just tried it on a website to  access a technical user manual PDF, and it worked fine.  With Hoopla's new software, no such luck.

Hate to be a PITA... Just thought it was something Hoopla tech support might be interested in exploring... when they have a free moment, that is.

David

By subscribe do you mean the Follow this Topic button at the top of the page? I use this and I haven't noticed the 'VIEW THIS REPLY' in the emails? Will pay closer attention, but I sure don't remember seeing that?

That would be the same as the same emails you get when you reply to a thread and automatically end up following it?

Let me provide a little help for Rick.  From within a forum, if you click on the thread title, you will be taken to the beginning of that thread.  If, however, you click on the phrase "Last Post" (at least, I think that's the choice) available on the thread title page, that's where you will go.  On the other hand, if you select a thread from the Recent Posts list on the right side of the screen, you will automatically go to the end of the thread where the most "recent post" for that thread can be seen.

I think that's the way it has always worked.

Chuck

Hi Rich,

Just a follow up with some additional information regarding posting pictures from an iPad 3. I typically use Chrome, and as I mentioned previously, I couldn't attach a picture ~1.5MB or larger. I just tried Safari, and the picture loaded immediately. So the issue appears to be with Chrome, not the iPad itself. Hope the info helps Hoopla track this issue down.

Andy

Rich,

Thanks for the update from Hoopla tech-support.  I had a feeling it was gonna be a compatibility issue with some of the older technology devices out there.  Hazards of the technology treadmill moving full-steam ahead without really well-executed compatibility standards.    Even the developer-class folks don't always know what may or may not continue to work until we trip over these bugs.  It's like the wild, wild West out here!!!

BTW, I tripped over another minor bug tonight.  I noticed this thread I started a couple of weeks ago resides in the For-Sale sub-forum, but I had intended it to be in the regular 3-rail, O-Gauge forum.  Tonight, I tried to move it to the correct forum using the "Manage Topic" button.  And when I selected the new forum and clicked "update", the display refreshed... like I would expect if it processed something.  But the thread still shows up in the For-Sale sub-forum.

I've never had to move a thread from one sub-forum to another... is that something we've always been able to do as the thread author?  Or is that a "new feature" with this software?  If the latter, I couldn't get it to work... and I tried twice (using my desktop).

For some reason the forum comes across as a total mess at my work computer.  It looks like it just isn't getting the format at all.  I  don't know what the difference is, but at the same time I can bring up the forum on my tablet and it loads fine.  Nevef used to be a problem.

You have given me nothing to work with! I can't do anything to help you with this.

PC or Mac? Which OS? Version? Browser?

Only Admins can move a topic from one forum to another. (I just moved that one for you, David.) Are you saying that you had the "Manage Topic" button available to use? If so, please list  all the options that you can see under that menu.

I don't think you should even see the "Manage Topic" button. I think only Admins should see that. When I get to the office tomorrow, I will log in on my non-admin account and see what I can see.

Rich,

Thanks for moving the thread.

Yes... when I view that thread, I can see a "Manage Topic" button off to the right... just underneath an "Add Reply" button.  When I click on "Manage Topic", a single option to "EDIT TOPIC" appears.  If I click that button, I can then see the forum name in which the thread resides (with a drop-down arrow that shows other sub-forum names I can choose); the thread title; thread content; pictures I posted as attachments; and then finally thread "tags".  Beneath all of that is an "UPDATE" button.  I made no changes other than the sub-forum name in the drop-down menu, then clicked UPDATE.  The display refreshed, but the thread didn't move to the sub-forum I selected -- probably 'cause I'm not an admin.  However, the thread has now moved to the correct sub-forum since you moved it.

Hope that helps.

David

Not sure if this is upgrade related.  Opened up this thread in the DCS section on Marty F's schematic where he posted an image.

This is the post in question and how it looks before I open the image...

and when I click the provided photo...

Maybe Marty's file itself?  Seeing both on iPad 9.1 and FireFox 42.0.  It is a TIF format.  Sorry if unrelated to the upgrade.
