I know there are some variations on the Lego trains, but will they "sit" on traditional O-gauge track? Do they have the same outside rail dimensions? I think I might add this one to my layout as a static piece parked on a siding. I see the power functions can be added. It's funny reading the reviews as they mostly talk about wheel slip when adding the power. One reader caught on to add a rubber band to the wheel, what we here call a "traction tire". Thanks

The short answer is no. You could modify the LEGO rolling stock and fit them with O gauge trucks but a locomotive would be more of a challenge. The set your looking at would still make a cool looking display piece for Christmas. You could paint the LEGO track to make it look a little better than just all black.
Thanks Chris. Too bad for me.
Here is a Lego Scooby Doo Mystery Machine I adapted to a E-Z Street chassis which is O scale compatible. Lots of Dremeling and super glue. "Lego" scale (whatever that is) is a little big for O scale so I needed to size down vertically and horizonally. Unclepeterr

LEGO gauge (L gauge in the LEGO train world.) is wider than O, so LEGO trains will not fit on O gauge track. And due to the way they are built, you could not regauge L to O, unless you are comfortable taking a sander to your LEGO pieces. But they are still fun to play with.
I have mounted Lego cars on O gauge trucks, but the problem comes in when dealing with engine. The Lego system is all metric and comes out about 2 mm bigger than O gauge. (not exact difference, just an eyeball observation.) It would take some significant work to change the gauge and still use all Lego parts. I am fairly positive it could be done, just never had the time to work out.
Lego trains have a following all there own. Some of the rolling stock and locomotives are amazing. Below are some pictures I took of a display by PennLUG at the York Greensburg Show in 2013.
