If there is a bright spot in the loss of Penn, it is the fact that this demoliton sparked the preservation movement that has saved many other notable structures, incl. GCT. The demolition of Penn Station showed that nothing was beyond the reach of the wrecking ball, and pretty much erased the notion that our great architectural monuments would simply always be there. We have continued to lose some, but many have been preserved thanks to the martyrdom of Penn Station. Cincinnati Union Terminal came within an eyelash of being destroyed, but was saved by concerned folks who learned in part from the Penn Station tragedy.
In Portsmouth,Ohio the large passenger station which was the last new passenger station that the N&W built.
Also just around the curve between Waller and Hutchison Streets,a big building that was the last piece of Scioto Valley railroad history in southern Ohio.
Both structures were razed within the last 10 years Frown
The good thing about teh destruction of Penn Station is that it awakened people to their history and heritage and led to a preservation movement. That was one of the things that helped preserve Grand Central Station as well.

I never had the privilege of seeing Penn Station. But I do remember this grand old lady who's long gone - http://condrenrails.com/MRP/Me...is_Union_Station.htm

We could probably post here a whole gallery of once great stations that are now gone. I could only guess at what some of them would be.

..oh, for any Southern Ry fans, here's another that was a big deal in its day - http://condrenrails.com/MRP/Ot...mphis-Charleston.htm
Not just the stations.
Think about all the lines that were removed in the 1970s and '80s.
The sources of revenue.Steel mills, factories, chemical plants, coal mines etc.
Also smaller factories in smaller towns similar to much that we model.
The reason for their disappearance doesn't need to be considered, just that they are gone.
