I stopped by my local hobby shop that carries some Lionel trains and picked up the 125 years of Lionel 2025 catalog.  I noticed that about a quarter of the catalog is dedicated to themed trains.  Themed trains include Stars Wars, Halloween, Superman, Batman, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Harry Potter, Disney, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Thomas & Friends, Barbie 65, Mattel 80, Rock'en Sock'em Robots, Peanuts, John Deere, Anheuser Busch, Ford, Chevrolet, American and Railroad History, Personal Pictures, Area 51 and of course Christmas.

I beat them to one theme, University and College railroad cars.  At a A&M graduated granddaughters request, I make Texas A&M University boxcar.  Texas A&M has 60,000 students and hundreds of thousand of alumni as do many other universities and this could be a big source of sales for Lionel University themed railroad cars.  Most would not have an interest in railroad cars but would buy a Lionel Themed car to put on display in home or office.

@Choo Choo Charlie - While not born or from Alabama, I was there for 16 years. Every year we'd hear about the "Iron Bowl" between Auburn University and the University of Alabama. Happened to accidently stumbled across both boxcars from Lionel and purchased them. Lionel did some college boxcars years ago. Many may still available. Supposedly 30 in the series.

Here's a partial list:

2006: University of Michigan, Penn State, University of Illinois, University of Alabama, University of Oklahoma
2007: Purdue University, University of Virginia.
2008: University of Maryland, Villanova University, U.S. Military Academy at West Point

Thanks for the update on prior Lionel University themed cars.  I was not aware that they had made university themed cars in the past.  Based on your info that Lionel made cars for 30 universities several years ago, it was not much of profitable idea for them.

As with many of past Lionel offerings being expensive, rare or hard to find, I had or got to make my own car.  I am in the middle of building a Atlas or MTH based Snow Plow car this month.
