Hi Scott and Everyone!

It's been over 15 years since we've seen 3rd Rail do the STUNNING and SUCCESSFUL

5011 class 2-10-4 with the long oil Tender.

It's time for Sunset 3rd trail to do the NEVER BEFORE DONE IN O SCALE Santa Fe 5001 class with the LEVEL OF DETAIL seen today, such as the Santa Fe 2900 Class Northerns which are PHENOMENAL!

1 - The 5001 class have NEVER been done in O scale

2- They ran in California, and Colorado, and others territories that appeal to even a wider group of collectors and Modelers alike

3- You can make them as Built 1938 version / Early 40s which is great for PRE and Early periods

4 - They can be offered as well with modified Steam dome removed, and late 40s and 1950s rebuilt appearance to appeal to Post War

5 - They were available in Coal and Oil versions - Tender would be similar to Sunset one used on the ATSF 3751. - 20,000 gallon

Would love to see Sunset do these in 2019!  Can you imagine How amazing these would be?!  It's a great way to have a STATE OF THE ART Sunset Santa Fe 2-10-4, in an engine that has never been done before, with the fidelity to detail that only Sunset can do!

Gary Shrader of O scale Kings recently completely modified an old brass 2-10-4, into the 5001 class with STUNNING DETAIL...

What do you guys think?

Happy Railroading!

Two reasons I would not purchase - although it's definitely a locomotive worthy of a Sunset/3rd Rail offering.

1) I own an MTH Premier model of Santa Fe #5012. It might not be up to the standard of a Sunset/3rd Rail version but it's quite satisfactory for me.

2) In view of 1) above, I cannot justify the expenditure.

On the other hand, I would purchase a New Haven I-5...

Well good luck to Ya on this one. I've been trying to get Scott to do the C&O K3/3a with both tenders, as well as, the NYC H-10 a, b, c, d.....

Both versions were "Super Makido's Magnificent".........

As far as cost..........?.....It's  What ever the Market will Bare, just like anything else........Just Sayin

Did the 5001 class engines ever actually operate over Raton Pass on passenger trains (or any trains), as Vintageclassics says? -- "Also, #5004 would also pull passenger engines from New Mexico to Colorado!"

2-10-2s were used in helper service over Raton Pass, but I didn't think I've ever seen a photo of a 5001 class engine on Raton, nor can I find a reference to such use (which doesn't mean it never happened).

0-54 3 rail min radius  and I would buy

This is the sort perspective that brings a smile to those of us who've dabbled some/much of our model railroading lives in HO scale.  An O-54 curve (diameter) in O3R parlance is equivalent to a 13.5" radius in HO.

An HO 2-10-4 navigating a 13.5" curve??   Yeah........right.

Lessee....take the flanges off the wheels on axles 1, 3, and 5, use a rubber band for an engine-tender drawbar, provide for trackside clearance of about 3+ inches.......Hmmmmmmmm......maybe so, maybe so.

Awkward.

Just had to comment. To me this engine, although very similar to the 5011 Class, has some great features that set it apart. Read the article by Gary Schrader and you will see why he took the effort to build one for himself.

Two obvious things stick out to me.

1. The option of a coal fired version. Accoring to Worley, they lasted to '48. That means two tender choices coal or oil, both different from the 5011 Class.

2. The outside bearing lead engine truck, which I think is great looking, adding nice detail.

I've own 2- 3rd rail 5011's and one MTH version. I like them all, but the 3rd Rail version is superior. Another thing is that 3rd Rail Santa Fe engines have improved greatly over the years and if they did a 5001 Class 2-10-4, it will outclass the 5011 they did early in the 2000's.

Love to see it built.

Nope on this one.

Had two 'Nopes' from 3rd Rail already on ATSF:

1) 1800 or 1050 Class 2-6-2's.  Nope. (Scott tried.....'we' Santa Fe Modelers couldn't muster enough demand....project dropped.)

2) 2 Class EMD E-1's...to go with their now-announced 1938 Super Chief with which the E-1's were complemented and celebrated.   Go figure.  (Even celebrated by the USPS on a stamp.....the only iconic diesel so honored)

Too many never-yet-done opportunities to be done before doing upgrades.  Lessee, how many 'upgrade' variations of UP Big Boys, NYC Hudsons/Niagaras, EMC F's, etc., etc., etc., blah, blah have the other players been through by now?   And now we want 3rd Rail to acquire this time-worn bit of shtik?  Why not have other artisans....such as Gary Schrader...offer to commercially upgrade earlier models at a premium price befitting his talent and the limited demand.

And, what then?  All the other owners of prior releases join in the now-popular "Me Too" hysteria of the day......Norfolk Western, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, B&O, New York Central, etc., etc., etc.....latest-and-greatest detail/paint/sound/control upgrades applied to all former 'lesser grade' releases???   ......while we further wonder where something NEW is?  .....and will it ever be seen in our lifetime?   ....to the delight of a dwindling demographic hobby segment?

And, apparently there's not as many of 'we' Santa Fe Modelers out there to support new projects as are mavens of Virginian's EL-2B mammoth electrics.  Way to go, you VGN guys/gals!!!

Just MHO, mind you.

Wow! Sunset really did a great job on that engine without "breaking the bank" I do not recall how long ago they imported that engine as I have been out of steam era modeling for a long time. JMO

I agree... They did a phenomenal job, with a tremendous amount of detail, at a reasonable price, and great operation.

Again... I think it's time for Sunset to REGARDLESS, do another ATSF engine... it's been a spell since the last steam engine. And I must say, the 4-8-2's, the 2-10-2's and the 2900 class are out of this world.

What do you guys think?

The latest Email from Scott today shows a full production schedule for 2018, it seems like any new models to be posted for reserve would come in next years schedule. Obviously Scott receives lots of model requests from which he must select models for future reservation, so its all about the number of requests for a given model to even make the reservation list. JMO

I just did a search on "Brass Trains" website.    Max Grey, US Hobbies, and Precision Scale have all done Santa Fe 2-10-4 models.    Precision was just in 2012 and there are a bunch for sale on the site.    There is just probably no market for another model of this locomotive right now or the near future.

Hi PRRJIM!

While you are correct that various ATSF 2-10-4's have been done... the 5001 class has never been done.

Interesting note on the Precision scale engines... I donated my own Hallmark Samhongsa 5001 class #5003 to do the prototypying for the "proposed" models... this was along with many hours of research going through Harrisburg,PA arrchives for Baldwin etc...

Needless to say, the engines never got produced!

Just curious, but this looks like a winner for 3rd Rail to do....  Would you guys buy this?

A few people missed out on the 2900 class 4-8-4s, and they sold well, and I love my 2929... Thank you Sunset!  This would be an AWESOME Modern Engine to do...  Just as Howard mentioned...

Imagine... Coal & Oil versions, with the cool lead truck, that hasn't been seen yet.

AND, you can do 1940s or 1938 as built version, with Steam dome and standard plumbing

OR, you could do late 40s and 1950s version with REBUILT boilers, and NO STEAM DOME, High Check Valves, modernized

I would personally buy at least 3 of these if this were offered, and I see others seem to really like the idea of the 5001 class....

Great thoughts Howard, and everyone in support...

Hi Guys,

Another significant difference between the 5001 and the 5011 classes was the different style of drivers.  I like the 5001 Baldwin Disc drivers personally over the Boxpok style that the 5011's were equipped with.

Steve

I agree Steve,

The Baldwin Disk drivers make this a tantalizing engine, if it would be offered by Sunset... And significant enough to be different than the 5011 class, which is long discontinued and sold out.

Also, the tenders aside from being available in coal or oil versions, had two styles of trucks

I believe the 5001-5005 were equipped with Buckeye trucks, and 5006-5010 were equipped with Commonwealth tender trucks.
