I purchased my first two locomotives and both were Lionel SD70Ace Heritage Locomotives. One in particular had to be sent back to Lionel because the shell was cracked. It was a Lionel 6-38739, and they replaced the shell with the road number that belongs to 6-38738. Later down the line I wanted to get the Legacy 990. If I was to pickup another 6-38739 I would have two different road numbers, but the internals would be the same.

Can the Legacy 990 differentiate the two when ran at the same time when I program it with the orange modules?

Also side note: If anyone knows why my smoke unit doesn't on my other SD70Ace doesn't smoke unless 5-10 extra drops are added on top of the recommended amount(10-15)? Going to call them later about this one. Makes me sad that I'm probably going to pay for a second shipment for warranty repair within a few weeks of owning these.

Thanks

I re-read your original post.  I think I might have gave you a correct answer but not the one you are looking for.

When you load the module for the new 6-38739 it will obviously assign the road number matching the older engine.

You can select the older engine with the new shell and I assume a different road number and edit it's road number by pushing INFO.  Once there you can scroll through the options and change the displayed road number to match the replacement shell.

Now both engines even though technically are the same, but with different shells will have their unique road numbers as well.
