I am considering buying a loco with road # ending in 01. I already have a 1.(I can change it) Is 01 the same as 1 on the cab1? Thanks; Don

Lionel ships all engines programmed as 1 or 01, its the same.
Its a good practice to change your engine off of 1 so that when you purchase a new engine and start it up in 1, others do not follow.

Don,
J Daddy is right on. One "best" practiced that has been talked about is after I add the engine, I place it back into PRG mode and change the address to match the last two numbers of the cab number. Good luck!
I do change them but the loco I want is 3801. i suppose i could call it 38 or just buy a different loco. Don
There is no special reason you can't use ID #1, it's just the default that locomotives come with. You can use anything from #0 to #98, 99 is reserved because newer Legacy locomotive all respond to that address, regardless of their assigned ID.
What I do with numbers like 3801 is use the number 81. I use 20 for an engine number like 200.
I reserve numbers 1 through 9 for engine consists.
I like that when I changed to legacy it didn't matter what I assigned my TMCC number to, I just type the cab number is when I want to call up a specific locomotive.
My other #1 is a trackmobile. I think i will make it"0". Don
MU configurations and the locomotive numbers shouldn't clash, why reserve those numbers? I just configured my Legacy SP Alco PA A-A set as Train 1, then programmed my little TMCC utility truck as TMCC #1. They run totally independent of each other, no conflict in sight?
