In the past years I have used an MTH 1000 to power my tinplate loop under the Christmas Tree.  This year I will have to do something different and would like an opinion or two.

My MTH power is currently being used to power my signals on my O layout.  I am unable to get under the platform and swap out that one for a similar Lionel transformer.  So,I guess that I will have to use the Lionel power pac for my standard gauge loop.  I'm hoping that there will not be any glitches using the Lionel transformer in conventional mode.  Will there be any differences?  I have never used Lionel power for an MTH engine.

Depends on what your Lionel power pack is and what MTH locomotive you are running. The only problem I can see would be with a Lionel CW-80 power pack, which has compatibility issues, especially with PS-1. If you're not running either PS-1 or a CW-80, the odds are in your favor. It would help if you posted exactly what Lionel transformer you have in mind and what locomotives you plan to run under the tree.
