The early PS2 equipped G5s suffered from what is called the MUX board issue. There were other engines as well that suffered from this issue. I have one from the U.S. Army boxed set and it does it as well. MTH can fix the problem if you get an RA and send it in to them. I do not know what they charge to fix it as I have not sent mine in to be fixed yet.

I have a Premier 2-8-0 that also does this. Turn off the smoke and the lights stop flickering. Bill is right about the MUX board fix. I just leave the smoke off most of the time. Does not seem to effect any thing else.

There are a few things that can be done to fix this problem. If the first option of swapping the Royal Blue wire on the mux board with the Royal blue wire to the ps-2 board fixes it I could do this for you while you wait. I am down the mountain in Lewistown. The other options require a little more time and maybe ordering a couple of components from MTh. At the time I do not have them in stock.

I have a happy resolution to the trouble with my MTH PS2 steamer. As you guys mentioned, it is a known issue, and required a "flickering light modification". Lucky for me, my LHS is Nassau Hobby, in Freeport, NY. I brought it in, and Charlie took care of it. Thanks Charlie! They're a top shelf bunch of guys. Now my G5s makes great steam with no more flickering lights!!
