up 9000 erratic behavior

hello. i have a lionel up9000 and for some unknown reason the engine when going around the track starts and stops at will. it has odyssey but i don't use it and it is turned off. 2 years ago i replaced the r2lc board. could this be bad again? thanks for the help.
