I have replaced the RCDR board in this engine with the ERR Cruise Lite. This engine does not have railsounds, but does have horn and bell which I would like to continue to use. They have a nice tone. The board is installed and works as advertised excepting sound. My problem is how to trigger the existing sound board from the ERR board. The folks at ERR are not familiar with this sound board. They suggested I contact Lionel which I have done, however have not had any response to date. I have attached a picture of the sound board and would appreciate any input.

Bruce,
Electric Railroad manufacture a Sound Converter board for this purpose. Check out their web site. http://www.electricrr.com/
I have not used/installed one or a Cruise Lite. So you would need to check the Cruise Lite will work with the Sound Converter. I don't see any reason why it would not work from scanning the manual.
I am sure some of the other guys on the forum will chime in.

Bruce and Nick,
I have done the install of the Sound Converter in one of my Flyonel S gauge passenger sets. This set has a Railsounds B-unit. I had previously converted the A-unit with the Cruise Lite and wanted TMCC/Legacy control on the conventional Railsounds. This board will work with the Cruise Lite but I am not sure if it will control your horn and bell but I would think if they were triggered by controls on your transformer which, I believe trigger a dc offset on the rails, it should work. These sound converters are not to expensive, $25.00, so it might be well worth the try. I would think these
Sound Converters will work with any of ERRs' motor driver boards, I am going to attempt one in conjunction with a Mini Commander 2 in the future.

Ken at ERR did not mention the sound converter as a possible solution however it might serve the purpose. I'll see what he has to say today if I can reach him. When I spoke with him he said they were swamped so I guess a lot of folks are converting their older engines to cruise and / or command. Thanks for the suggestion!
Bruce
While you can use the Sound Converter, I'd probably just go a bit more and get full sounds with the RailSounds Commander. I've used the Sound Converter for other purposes, and it'll work fine with the CC-Lite if you go that way.

Thanks for the reply. As this engine did not come with RS it is possible that the horn / bell board is simply triggered by the dc offset. I'll look at that angle. I haven't tried any connections yet as I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this modification.
As a side note the Mini Commander 2 is the same board as the Lionel RCDR board I am replacing. Lionel has used it an a number or their engines. Should work well for your application and now that you've got me thinking (danger), I may have a use for it in a B unit conversion.
Good luck!

Thanks John. I am aware of that option. I just hate the sound of the GG-1 horn. Sounds like a wounded sheep. I don't see other electric options on the ERR site. I have a Dash-8-9 board on hand and can use that. I can turn the diesel background railsounds down. Appreciate the reply.

But...but... that's what it really sounds like.

Yes. One of the main reasons I don't own a modern GG-1.
Lionel does have a RS 5.5 board / 691RS5506B for their later HHP-8. May look into that if I'm not pleased with other options.
Bruce
I have the HHP-8 with that board. However, you can't buy that board without a trade-in, anything RS5 or later is not available without returning a defective matching board.

You're not helping!
