Tried to reply with quote but did not know how to do that.
Anyway, UPS does not offer insurance on packages just declared value. FEDEx doesn’t either. Only the USPO offer optional insurance.

isn't declared value simply insurance by another name?

Just too many ways for ir to grow legs. Before we retired, if any of my packages were redirected, it would only be redirected to a UPS STORE. if not, I left work, to go home and pick up or my neighbor would pickup for me.
Yes, depending on CC used they will take care of it. This is why I only use American Express for train purchases and anything else of large value. They guarantee your purchase. If it was never received or not packed properly, it is covered. Cardholder must be happy. Only had one issue on an engine received that was not working and seller was not going to repair or replace. American express pulled the money back until I was satisfied.

Joe, I chose CVS rather than have a big train box sitting on my front steps while I wasn't home. In the past, I always was able to pick up my packages without any problems whether it was CVS, Walgreens, or even Stables.
Update; CC company put a hold on releasing funds to the store and said I didn't have to pay the balance until the claim is resolved. Still no communications from the train store.
declared value does not = insurance. I'm just reporting what I found. It doesn't make sense to me.
That's true about the insurance but I know with the USPS you can't insure something worth $500 for $5,000.
I am sorry to hear of your dilemma. One time many years ago I ordered two locomotives from a hobby shop in Maine. When they did not show up I called them and asked what was going on? They said they were delivered. This was with Fed Ex. Yup, I tracked it Fed Ex said they were delivered but they weren't delivered my house. Not knowing what to do (back then my house number was 548) I went to 528 on my street because once or twice I had gotten their mail. I figured maybe Fed Ex had made the same mistake. The person there who I admit seemed a little strange to me said he did not receive the package. I went back home. About 3 days later it showed up and the locomotives had been taken out of the box by someone who knows nothing about O gauge trains. They broke several details off the one locomotive but I was happy not to be out the almost $600 I paid for the locomotives. So was the person I met the person who took the trains out of the box and they got nervous when I showed up?
What scares me about this business of dropping off items at places like Walgreens or CVS is all it takes is one person with sticky fingers to really screw something up. I hope that isn't the case here and the package is found. Good luck and keep us posted.
Any time you redirect packages, this is the risk you run. Why not just have it delivered to your home?
I never thought those delivery locations worked very well. You are relying on NON UPS/Fedex people to handle your packages.
Your package could actually be there and the CVS employees don't even know where to look or where they put it.
Your dealing with shifts of multiple people.
I have to agree with Sean, once you redirect the package, I think that may have shifted the blame from UPS to you or the store it went to.
If you go to the UPS website they explain that they do not directly offer insurance by rather they have a basic declared value of $100 and if you want to declare an addition value they charge additional fees.
They do however offer insurance through a licensed affiliate UPS Capital Insurance Agency.
I got the information directly from the manager at the UPS store as well as their website.
How to you insert a quote into a reply posting?

I hasten to add, other than losing the package, try to get FedEx to pay for damage to a shipment, no matter how well it's packed!
I have been pretty lucky with deliveries. I do have my text messages set up to text me when a delivery arrives for UPS, FedEx and USPS to prevent theft. If i'm not going to be here I'll have them redirected to the UPS Store or FedEx Office. Note if you don't sign up for UPS My Choice the UPS Store charges $5.00 service charge if you do sign up it's free. I had a UPS parcel misdelivered once and and one from Nicholas Smith that was crushed by what looked like a truck. Chris Gans still remembers it from around 1986. UPS did cover the damages. I been ok with FedEx and just had a package from Nicholas Smith arrive about 30 minutes ago. You can also write in delivery instructions to Please Ring Doorbell when leaving a parcel. Today with tracking you can make it a point to stay home when you are expecting a package if you're retired like i am.

Doesn't matter what you call it - insurance, declared value, what ever. The basic fact is that if you expect to get more that $100 from UPS for loss or damage, you have to pay the fee on that excess amount.
Amen
I wish you luck tracking down your trains Frank. I just filed with the cc over my office supplies as well. The seller keeps saying its just delayed in shipment, but he won't give me a tracking number, so I think that is more wishful thinking than an honest assessment. The next step is I probably have to find a new supplier.

Another word of advice. When you purchase your shipping label online always have them scan when you drop your item off at the PO, UPS or FedEx and ask for a receipt. Insurance is not covered until it's scanned into the system.
A cautionary note for shipping USPS Priority Mail. When the postal clerk generates the postage label, he/she types in the destination Zip Code. Watch what happens when the Zip Code is fat-fingered ... the package arrives at the destination Zip city distribution point only to be immediately routed to the fat-fingered Zip distribution point. I watched an overnight package bounce between Phoenix and Atlanta for a week before my postmaster posted a hold for hand routing. Verify the destination Zip on your receipt at the counter when mailing.

We verify the address, street, city and zip code. John

Not a problem for me, the shipping labels are all generated by me at my very own little computer. This eliminates any fat-fingered zip codes.
John,
Assume you still need to take to post office after applying labels. Do you then have an option to insure the value of your product?

You can buy insurance online and you can also add signature conformation if you don't want the parcel left on the doorstep. Priority Mail is automatically insured for up to $50.00 and UPS & FedEx up to $100.00 but you can upgrade then to a higher amount.

You have to do it when you buy the label. I once had a package with a wrong weight and I asked at the P.O. if I could pay them for the additional charge. The answer was that they do not have the capability to alter the computer generated label from eBay.
Here's a trip of one of my packages, I have the worst mail service I have ever had. I have similar shipments. It seems my mail gets in a loop once it gets to Atlanta. It's nothing for it to go back and forth in Atlanta for 3 - 5 days. Anyway, check this out.
We have a winner!
Thanks guys for all your help and I enjoyed your stories that were similar to mine.
My last update. On Sunday, I made my third trip to CVS and I found my package sitting on their shelf waiting for me to pick it up. Apparently, UPS made delivery one week after they told me it was delivered. I tried canceling my Claim with UPS but I couldn't find anything on their site to make the cancelation. Guess me signing for the package will cancel the claim. Last, I notified my CC company to release the funds.
Overall, UPS made this simple delivery a royal mess with me having visions of losing my funds and not being able to get a replacement.

If there is no insurance, what's the extra charge for? Writing the extra number on the label?
What FedEx has to say about Declared Value.
The Declared Value for Carriage of any Package represents FedEx maximum liability in connection with a shipment of that Package, including but not limited to, any loss, damage, delay, misdelivery, any failure to provide information, or misdelivery of information relating to the Shipment.
Now let's see what UPS says...Declared Value covers the item value only. It does not include packing materials or shipping costs unless your item was packaged and shipped at a UPS store. Packages processed at a UPS store that resulted in a loss or incurred damage can receive the full declared value of the shipment and materials that was stated at the time of the transaction.
Sounds a lot like Insurance to me. What would you call it?
Frank:
Glad to hear you finally got it.

Glad you got your package. However I think its unfair to say UPS delivered the package a week later than they said. While that is surely possible I think its more likely that CVS mishandles your package and only recently found it to be held for your pick up. Either way at least you got it. Hope whatever was inside survived the trip!
A happy ending! :-)

When I ship the declared value is whatever I wish to pay in $50.00 increments. . I include the sale price and shipping cost and sometimes a little extra. Glad you got the package so no more worries.
