I know that the old TMCC base works well with Legacy through the serial port connection. Our club layout operates as such. My question is can the old TMCC base be used with the Cab-1L? I see that there is a serial port on the Cab1-L base. I cannot find any information in the various manuals on the subject. It would sure help me make use of my older TMCC remotes without buying additional Cab1-L remotes. I need to keep the grandkids happy.

The Base-1L is a Legacy lite base - you should be able to connect the TMCC base - the separate purchase of the Y cable will be necessary
so at $250 + $13 full retail - perhaps buy a used Legacy set
This was asked in this post a while back. Several folks from Lionel said this was not a good thing to do because of the code in the Base 1L. Read the entire thread.
Thanks everyone, good advice. So let me tell you what's behind my question. Some of my engines that are equipped with ERR will not respond to whistle commands from the Cab1L controller when used with the full Legacy on our club layout. Yet, the old TMCC controller (with the TMCC base Y'ed to the Legacy) will work the whistle on the ERR engines just fine.
I was curious, because I want to use the simpler Cab1L on the kid's layout and of course I have a couple of original TMCC controllers.
The Lionel guy in the earlier thread doesn't really seem to ban the combination outright and suggests experimenting, but I am with the you on the consensus that experimenting is "not recommended."
Oh, well. If anyone has insight to my above dilemma with the ERR issue, I'm all ears. These discussions are probably the most valuable part of the forum and a major force in the hobby.

Marty is right, I believe it was decided that the BASE1 won't work properly linked to the BASE1L, only to the Legacy base. By the same token, you can't link the BASE1L to the Legacy base, and there would be no reason to do so anyway.
I think Marty's post previously was a good summary.
