By 'value' I'm referring to its worth as an item to have in your possesion or collection as piece of toy train history not necessarily the $$$ value.

I'm somewhat perplexed as to the response (or lack thereof) this set has received since we've offered it.  We picked up some original trains from a widow in nearby Asheville several months ago. These were her husband's trains from the late 1940s. Among which was a beat-up No 2332 GG1, and Lionel 2-4-2 steamer, No 1033 transformer, some cars, and this Marx set in good shape.

I've offered it on the FS board twice now with no takers. It's very clean, graphics crisp,  and would make a nice display piece or a runner if you are so inclined. I've offered it for $35 SHIPPED with no takers.

Does anyone here collect Marx and can enlighten me as to the 'value' of this nice original set? Surely something this old and original is 'worth' something?

Thanks

Hello,  Yes I would say you have a nice set there.  But I've found in setting up tables at many train shows that there is not much interest in the 4-wheel plastic line.  These were made when Marx was on the decline.  They are also pretty common.  In spite of higher guide book values, I see the cars sell for $2 to $5.  Your engine looks like #490, which by itself lists at $20 in excellent condition, so your asking price is certainly reasonable enough.  Maybe you have to wait for the Marxist who decides to pick some up on a whim just because they don't have any of that line.  Hope this helps.

I think that's the answer, TrainsRMe

I had a set very similar to this.  I remember it came with a green Cities Service tank car.  I got it for Christmas in the early 1960s.  So, to me, it has more sentimental value than dollar value.

Would you take an offer on it?Originally Posted by c.sam:

I actually like this line.  (I do make sure the simulated trucks are painted black, though, like the later examples were).  The ones having metal wheels seem to make the clickety-clack sound over track joints better than anything else.  Maybe it's due to their light weight combined with the hollow shape of the boxcars, tank cars and cabooses.  (There is no frame).

Another problem with these cars is that they can have broken dummy knuckle couplers, for the seem rather fragile.

I just got in an MPC flat car that I am going to have to find Weaver trucks for, for the

thing, to my surprise, has lowered itself to this level by having dummu knuckle couples.

I don't "collect" Lionel.. I buy it if they have a car or roadname that fits what I am doing...I thought all modern Lionel had operating knuckles, and these are on roller

bearing sideframes, which seems odd.
