Is there a battery place in the tender? If not why?

I don't want a battery in it, that just means more headaches.

Sadly this locomotive does not have a battery. I wish mine did.
As to why a battery, because some of us love conventional running, and without the battery the sounds cut out and reset when you change direction. It kind of kills the magic of the beast during play time.
No battery, and no provision for one.
I am not being rude or ignorant, but it makes no sense to spend that much money on a locomotive and not be able to use its full features. I personally whould be unhappy with a battery in it.

Because there are times when you thrown a loop of track down on the carpet to run stuff, and don't want to bother with moving the Legacy base from the layout in the other room. All my locomotives get run in conventional from time to time, and I even enjoy it more than command at times.
I second that!!!

Why don't you run your engines in conventional mode on the layout? You can always turn the sound off on the Big Boy.
I have the 990 Legacy remote and run engine with that. The battery in my other engines is used in the shutdown sequence. and sometimes when crossing a switch. I do not run engines in conventional mode.
