I had an "old" (2007?) Train America Studios TMCC/RS steam upgrade kit that never got installed. No EOB (thank goodness!). I had forgotten it.

(Big-ish compared to the current ERR boards.)

So, I wanted to put it in a well-geared steamer with an antenna-friendly plastic tender shell. My Southern Railway WBB 4-6-0 looked likely.

After I got it installed, I was very pleased - but not surprised - that the loco will essentially creep and run at a steady pace due to the fact

that the gear ratios are correct for a model locomotive; no 150-mph Ten-Wheeler here. Doubtless it would slow down moderately on a grade (I have none)

under some circumstances, but, honestly, it will run as smoothly as, and nearly as slowly as, my cruise-equipped locos, and actually BETTER than

some of them.

See? I've always said that we could do without most of these complicated and expensive cruise systems is we'd just demand changes to a couple of

buck-and-a-half gears.

Once I tone down that WBB gaudy interpretation of a SOU green steamer (at least the roof isn't red - companies always get that wrong) it might look

nearly as good as it runs.
