I picked up a Weaver GP38-2 dummy for $35 at the Midwest TCA meet today.  It looked really good and the light and sounds worked, so I figured why not.  The front coupler is missing the pin to keep it closed and the back coupler works fine but looks weird, see picture for both couplers.  On the back coupler the pin with the spring is very high.  Not sure if anyone sells replacements.  I fixed the front one with a toothpick and super glue, so it stays closed, just not operational any more, which might be fine.  I don't own any other Weaver items so I don't know if the back coupler should look that way.

Thanks

Tony

I believe these Weaver engines were first made and sold as 2 rail scale engines.  Then later sold in the three rail configuration.     The three rail coupler set up is a vestige of the engines scale heritage.   They're nice runners but I recall some three rail guys complained they ran too slow.

The only problem I've ever had with it was a split universal joint yoke.  Weaver was kind enough to send me a replacement and a couple of spares without charge even though it was long out of warranty.  I'm sure you can all guess that since I have spares I haven't broken one since.  They also offered to send me the sprockets and chains to increase the speed but I was content with the slower speed.  They were very nice to  work with and I miss them.

That funky looking coupler brings back memories. It was Weavers solution to retaining a fixed pilot and being able to have an operating 3 rail coupler. I still have one in my junk box. The thumbtack has a coating of rust but it couples closed. The only thing. The coupler doesn’t pop open when you pull the thumbtack down. But it is released.  Drop me a line if you can use it. Frankly you found the best solution with the Kadee’s. But now you will want to convert everything over once you start running with them.
