Initially all I wanted was the RailKing NS and CSX Airslide hoppers. Those probably won't need a preorder. After the retirement announcement I took a second look, and decided to take a preorder plunge and add the UP SD70 #4884 (it was in 2020V1, but seems to not have shipped yet). and the 5-unit doublestack set (TTX) is starting to look good. Gotta have at least one PROCOR tanker, and thinking about three of the Premier autoracks even though I already have 50 of them (and only room to run 25 at any given time).

Being that I pulled the trigger on five GGD Viewliners (and soon an E60MA), I am hoping the timing works out and my "play money reserve" keeps up. Well, I got all summer and most of the fall at least, to figure out where to put 'em

My preorder is all rolling stock, so I'm keeping it.

Thought about an engine, but I have enough already.  More of a financial and space decision rather than concern over the future of DCS.

My 2 cents - If there's an item you really want, preorder it.  My expectation is that production will be limited to what the dealers order - there won't be anything extra for the warehouse (what warehouse?), so don't count on finding it later.  As far as ordering an engine, I wouldn't order my first DCS engine now.  However, most of us already have several (or a lot) of MTH engines.  They will all be in the same boat with whatever happens regarding DCS, so what's one more?

I doubled down. Already had a smattering of pre-orders on the books (B&O 4-4-0 and set, election sets) when the announcement rolled down, and then I went back and ordered the items I figured I'd "eventually get one day" that I wasn't willing to gamble would hopefully show up at a show or online: items that only MTH would make, and would only ever be remade if someone bought the tooling and decided to re-run them, and where I wasn't convinced there'd be a clear-cut business case to do it. So I added the Commodore Vanderbilt Breast Cancer Awareness engine, the Aerotrain and the TurboTrain. I almost pulled the trigger on the NASA and Canton SW1500's, but held off since I already have some Premier SW-9 in those liveries, and I'm willing to take the future show/online gamble.

Like others, I think if things go along the current trajectory, much of our hobby's scale/hi-tech equipment will be on firesale in 10-20 years (I believe the entry-level ready-to-run market will continue to survive for the foreseeable future), and I can pick stuff up as we go along. I'm sorry to have to strategize that way, but I think the writing is on the wall and the strategy is clear for scale O--if you're not picky and you're in the "whippersnapper" category like me (41), it's worth waiting 5-10 years. Wait 20 years and you'll be pinching yourself at the deals. If there's something specific that you really want and it's unique to MTH, however, then you'd better pre-order now.

Keeping for two reasons. First, I made the, perhaps foolish in retrospect, to move out some TMCC in exchange for DCS. Sold a semi-scale K-Line ESE in order to make room for a new PS3 version.  Second, I pre-ordered at a LHS, Stockyard Express, which is my new LHS since the original Trading Post closed, and I don't want to stiff a new supplier/partner. Just keeping fingers crossed that the DCS tech company will be able to provide spare DCS parts if needed in the future.

So I talked it over with my wife and I am upping my pre-order considerably.

There's a catch, she takes possession of everything when it arrives, and wraps up one item at random to give to me for Holidays & birthdays.

This way she knows that she will be giving me something I want and it will still be somewhat of a surprise. This should get her through the next 10 years of presents for me.

H1000-

Wow. That's a stroke of genius, my friend. YES, get the spouse's buy-in, make the spouse think that she's doing something for you rather than you just satisfying a craving for spending money on more trains. I love it. It's a win-win.

Maybe you could convince her that Christmas will come earlier this year?

That's what my wife does all the time.  Yes she has a few items on her shelf already!

I preordered an ABA set of the Premier Maine Central F3s.  I have been patiently waiting for MTH to make these for years and now it looks like I might finally have them!  Another shout out to Mike Wolf and the MTH crew who LISTENED to what some of us out there wanted and produced some road names for us New England rail fans.  Thanks, Mike!!

Call me crazy, but I just love that Long Island Alco RS-1, so i put in my pre order for it this morning along with the N5c caboose with the wrong color Long Island lettering.  I’m seriously leaning on pulling the trigger on the worlds fair Q car subway. It’s the only subway I don’t have in my collection. With MTH stopping production, I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to get one NIB going forward.  What’s one more DCS subway at this point? My train shop said I have until the end of the month to decide. Decisions, decisions.

I have nothing on pre-order.  I was on the fence about purchasing the 64' woodsided PRR passenger cars.  With this announcement I will probably order them.

I am getting back into the hobby and this time around I am keeping my buying to a minimum.  I'm focusing more on 19th century trains and I did just purchase a few Railking engines.  My worry, of course, is that I won't be able to find these on the secondary market down the road.  Some might feel differently, but I've noticed some items almost never seem to appear on the secondary market.

I'd have to concur.  Even for things not specifically touted as "built to order" (or whatever trendy phrase we want to hang on that scenario), with the huge number of offerings each catalog, there is serious dilution of the amount of "extra" product that will be ordered.  Sure some dealers will order extras of something they perceive to be a good seller, but the chances of those extra orders intersecting with a specific item you may decide you want later is slim, particularly if your desires are not the more common road names and items.

If you are on the fence for a NYC Hudson, you might be able to find one if you wait.  If you have been waiting your whole life for that Rose Acres MP-15 in the latest catalog, you might be smarter to pre-order it!

Theres plenty i will buy once in stock with many dealers available i don't forsee any shortages.  Waiting for SF h10 thats coming out this July to add to roster. Still deciding on many others that appeal to me, but there's time to decide so while I wait for those to arrive I will see what's out the to cherry pick from.

No point on cancelling, if they come they come if not will be disappointed.  Will get over it!

One item MTH has been making for decades but his one is in a paint not yet done.  Have been asking Andy for it over a decade now.  The website has it four months over due with 31 dealers having it on order. The other item is three months over due with 40 dealers having it on order.  And the web site also shows this to be shipping by June 15.  But must admit I am looking forward to the first item the most, it is something of home to me.

It's your choice of course, but you're really rolling the dice on items that haven't been produced yet, especially if there's something you really want.  How much extra will dealers order beyond their confirmed preorders?  Normally, there's still stock in the warehouse for dealers to pull from.  I wouldn't expect the same situation this time, since there won't be a warehouse to keep it in - MTH will build to dealer orders, period.

I can imagine two dealer reactions:  1) order everything I can afford because people will want to buy it eventually, or 2) why should I stretch myself to buy inventory that I'll have to sit on?  One must also consider whether or not a dealer will want to buy extra engines for which the warranty support will end in 2022.

I think it all depends on how the MTH situation progresses over the next few months, if a buyer comes forward then I see little or no change in dealer reaction, however, as things stand now I agree with you.  Not too many dealers will be willing to overextending themselves on what will essentially be a dead line.

I pre-ordered the NW 611 and cars.  Looking forward to them.  My position is no second guess here.  I committed to buy with Steve & Jeff when I ordered.  I would not want him to back out if he had the choice.  I know he wouldn’t.  I hope MM does well without MTH.

For C&NW fans, I think Lionel likes Zito Yellow now days.  MTH has the darker yellow.  May want to re-look.

I am keeping them Matt. I am going to be hit with a lot of stuff. I have the MTH Premier Soo Line SD40-2 in speed lettering that are red and the NP RS-11s coming. I have asked MTH to make both. In the new catalog there are a number of items that I wanted, which I asked MTH to make. That includes the WC SD35, GN SD45, NP GP7 and Milwaukee Road GP7. Two of the CP SD70 ACes in military schemes are a must. That was the original order. After MTH's accouterments I reached out to Eastside Trains in Seattle and also ordered the SP SD35 and NKP S2.

I am hoping that someone will step up and that the company will continue. So I am going to be optimistic and bet that this will work out someway.
