In the distant past, I've used dental impression material to create a mold which I would then fill with a two-part epoxy to create headlight bezels to represent a second headlight on PW LIONEL F3's.  The second headlight was added to approximate a prototype.

I am returning to this modeling and need to add second headlights to several PW LIONEL F3's and would like to know what newer, more readily available materials are available.  I'm simply trying to make a headlight bezel that I can attach to the front of the loco; I'll then drill the cab to mount the lens.

Thanks.

I use Smooth On oomoo 30. I didn't make it up, thats what the call it. I prefer the longer set time to make sure all the air bubbles float away.

I started out using 100% silicone sealant for molds and 2 part epoxy for casting with mixed results. Shelf life seems reasonably long. I am still using the product 5 years after purchase.

My photo hosting site appears to be down right now or I would post pics.

uuummm.. Never molded anything except ceramics, with molds for it.

However, I have the fix on order.

One 8" build cube 3D printer is paid for and supposed to ship this month.

I got it cheap by buying in advance on a new design from Solidoodle.

Check them out, much lower cost than the competition.

Be sure to compare build area, heated platform, resolution, and materials it can use to get fair results.

Example, Solidoodle Workbench model is $1,299 but that's a 12" build cube, with all the goodies built in. Comparable to the big names that would cost ... Oh ya, no one else makes one that big. But the standard at Makerbot goes for $2,899 and it's smaller than mine.

Update Stratasys has a 12"x9"x9" but I can't even get a price and you know what that means. You also have to buy the material in proprietary sealed containers but they have materials no one else offers. This appears to be a liquid materials with UV or other curing setup. Also can print medical grade parts, so add that cost level in.
