What Does the ‘S’ Mean

A picture would be useful.

i thought it meant  sand service.

Just looked it up online and it says that the car was equipped with special features or had been modified in some way. For example, is could denote that the boxcar had steel underframes or other structural reinforcements. Hope this helps. Mark

For all above I did find a picture of a pennsy boxcar with the S, don't know if I can post a picture if I take it off the computer, so look up What does the S stand for on P.R.R. boxcar then go to image, and you will find the boxcar with the S. Mark    update this is the boxcar I found  #497330

Stores is correct.  These were to handle company supplies and parts.
