I am thinking at the rate our ranks are diminishing that it will be Train Collectors themselves which will be the rare and valuable collectible in 40 years.
Most of us got the train bug as kids when toy trains were the nation wide hot thing. Kids today seem to be entering early obesity being engrossed in disposable thumb exercise devices. How collectible could 40. 50 or 60 year old unsupported obsolete antique devices be in 2062? Will they even be aware that toy trains existed at one time?
A recent article offering advice on what kind of collectible to avoid because of waning interest lumped Beanie Babies, Precious Moments with toy trains. Connect that with the diminishing value of trains due in part to inventory glut and a dying customer base.
We have four kids, nine grand kids and three greats. Not a single one has one ounce of train interest. Even the host of our grade school neighbor kids fail to show any interest in trains.
It seems that just maybe most TCA folks like me have a AARP card and a cardiac doc on speed dial.
