I am surprised no one has mentioned the Inter modal cranes. I have one and my son can play with it for hours. Being fully motorized, you can drive it or unload your tractor trailers.
After that I would have to go with the TMCC crance car
Finally, the gantry cranes.
Here's mine:
That's all the automation I need for my layout.

I second Mels Diner , always a hit.

Lionel's modern era Steam Clean and Wheel Grind Shop because it combines realism, play value and animation in one! It does take up a bit of space, but all 3 pieces in the accesory are totally worth using. I think the steam clean section is the coolest out of the 3~

I'm trying to plan a layout for my son and he seems to like switching. What is your favorite operating accessory or what might you suggest? I like the idea of processing items, like loading logs, taking them to a mill and making lumber. Any suggestions on what brand and accessory to buy?
Thanks!
Did you narrow it down? Any thoughts on your mind?
Definitely the horse car. I grew up in the 70s and it reminds me of the old electric football games.
I apologize for the quality of the first two. They were shot with a standard Canon camera(not a video camera).

The Coaling Station & Culvert Twins:
And this one shows the #313 Bascule Bridge, Milk Car, Forklift Loader, and Cattle Car all in action.

Has anyone's milkman ever operated perfectly? It seems that a milkcan always gets stuck or at least one milkcan falls over on the platform.
Watch my third video.

His delivery was good Jon, but still one milk can fell over. I think that I only had one instance where the all the milk cans were perfect and none of my horses fell over.
By the way, I enjoyed all of your videos.

As much as I like the nostalgia, I don't like the buzz of older Lionel accessories so I'll probably go for modern and re-issued items. My favorites are:
Oil drum loader
Milk car (probably just unloading)
Culvert loader/unloader
log loader and lumber mill
The gantry crane looks nice too. Thanks for all of the comments and videos!
My favorite was the American Flyer sawmill.
My faves would be -
1- 282R Crane - I LOVE this one - lots of fun & action
2- 364 Lumber Loader - Simple, but fun
3- AF/MPC Oil Drum Loader - put this with a 455 & you have a nice oil scene
4 - 352 Ice Station - another simple, but fun one
His delivery was good Jon, but still one milk can fell over.
Geez... tough audience!
