I am trying to get an idea on what type(s) of smoke resistors can be used in the Puffer type smoke units. I needed to replace one in my PE Berk and did so with the one from Lionel. However on Digikey and Mouser there are others. And I would like to know which ones will work with the puffer units. Can one install a resistor that is 3W and 5% but has an ohm rating between 22 and 30? What type of coating on the resistor is acceptable for the smoke unit (vitreous enamel, cement filled ceramic or silicon coated)? Which of the coatings are easy to remove if one wants the windings exposed? I would like to replace the others in my other ready to run sets and am just trying to get an idea from those with more experience than me on what has worked in the past. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone provides.
