A used modern transformer (if no quarantee) is risky, the question is how much money are you willing to gamble if it fails.

I picked up a "slightly" used MRC Dual for $80, and the store gave me a week to work with it, which was very gracious. I've been using it flawlessly for over five years now.

There are so many "subtle" things i.e. intemittent cooling fan, over active (weak) circuit breakers, sudden over-heating after "x" amount of time, and other maladies that could ultimately render the unit useless.

Good luck with your pursuits!

What would be a fair price on a nice used Z4000??

Depends on whether I'm selling it or buying it. Big Grin

Seriously, it depends on a lot of factors the main ones being condition and what kind of guarantee, if any, the seller offers. The starting point for me would be the current price for a new Z4000 - I believe MSRP is about $470 and some dealers are selling them for around $400. So I would definitely be looking at a price below $400. They appear infrequently for sale in the train club publications I get but one I saw for sale last year, described as "Like New," was priced at $300.
Varies. I got mine used for $160 plus tax...in California no less! The hobby shop had just bought an estate collection and I got tipped of about it by another club member. I literally grabbed it before they put it on the shelf. If buying a used transformer, make sure you get some type of guarantee that it works. The MTH Z4000 is way more sophisticated than your basic Post-War ZW.
