I finally got around to installing the new motor today.  Unfortunately I don't think it was my problem in the first place.  It seems to be more of an issue of excess lateral slop in the drive wheels.  I ordered some E clips to snap on as spacers to see if removing some of that slop will help.  It definitely seems like the flanges are rubbing on the inside of the blind drivers, especially upon stopping hard.

I found an interesting problem that might be related. When I run mine with a significant (I won't say heavy) load, the left rear traction tire "bunches up," and the "bunch" won't fit through the space between the two drivers. This brings it to a screeching halt.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, mine also had extreme lateral slop, wouldn't even run smoothly upside down on the bench.

That's an interesting thing to look for too, I'll have to keep an eye out as there's not much space between the treads of the drive wheel tires.

Mine makes a loud screeching sound if you stop it suddenly, rather than stopping somewhat smoothly due to flywheel action.  I noticed some rub marks on the back of the center drivers, so I'm thinking they may be doing something goofy when it stops or goes around curves.

I'll see if the E clips help it out any.  The E clips are like what Lionel used to hold trucks onto postwar freight cars and locomotives.

hello guys and gals.........

I had the same problem with my Williams F-3's power trucks which had the same slop problem as you guys had.   I had to buy nylon washers about .020 thick and cut "V"slot on the washers then slip in place on non-gear side on all 3 ABA power units axles and that solved the problem.   if there is a lot of slop, it will eat up the gears in time.   I purchased 2 power kits and they had slop in it.  So much for poor quality control in China
