Been running my Williams ten wheeler for several weeks, and have made a modification which may be of interest.

The gap between the engine and tender seemed excessive, so I set out to shorten it a little. This was done by cutting off the "hook" and then bending another hook of about the same length. This moved the tender nearly 7/16" closer to the engine, greatly improving its overall appearance. Took maybe ten minutes.

The engine has run about an hour on a layout with both left and right hand 031 and 042 curves and switches, without any problems - even on those dreaded 031 reverse curves. There is plenty of room for the coupler linkage to function. I was concerned that the tether might cause some issues, but it is so flexible that there is no tendency to disconnect - it has not required re-seating.

This gap could be reduced a little more, but it might affect operation on 027 track, primarily due to possible tether issues.

When received, in addition to the instructions on lubricating the engine, I did take time to grease the gears, and oil the gear shafts and the motor bushings, which reduced engine "whine" - what's left I attribute to the steam generator.... I also cleaned up the holes on the connecting rods - they were a little tight.

Overall, this is a great engine that runs and looks great, one which I can easily recommend.

A friend of mine did this with his except he shortened the end of the engine drawbar where it attaches to the engine and drilled a new hole in it for attaching. No bending of drawbar required. I bought one of these engines myself and plan to shorten the drawbar the same way. I have oiled my engine at the axle bearing points and the rods, valve gear and lead truck axles. Haven't checked the gears yet or figured out how to get to them. Engine runs great so far and looks good with 64 ft. MTH woodside open platform passenger cars. My friend is going to help me customize the engine with perhaps a different road name and spruce up some details on the casting. Whistle is the tru blast type with prearranged crossing signal but I like the sound of it. Best steam engine for the money I have seen in years.

Great tip on shortening the drawbar.

I hope to do that with my Santa Fe version and also add a tender/engine deck plate. I have already removed the headlight which will be mounted on a light shelf @ front center of the smokebox door. I cut off the bell for relocation to the top front of the smokebox. Already have a Cal Scale brass bell with cradle but ordering a headlight from Precision Scale. Modifying along with paint and decoration to more closely represent an Atlantic & Yadkin passenger Ten Wheeler.

I also have a Southern version which eventually will be modified in the same manner.
