Hello Everybody I have been wondering if anyone has A Lionel 1681 they are selling because the engine belonged to my grandfather but he lost the engine and he gave me the cars that went with it. This engine I have trying track down for months with no luck, this engine is why I got into toy trains. If anyone is selling this engine please tell me it is very appreciated.

Hi,
Check on ebay, I just searches and found one plus two for restore.

You might try, Jim & Debby Flynn. Their seller ID is, jdpltd. Jim always has a excellent selection of prewar tin.

I've got 2 in my 'for sale' box.

Where do you find the for sale box?
ummmm.... my basement.
One is nicer than the other, but you might opt for the other as your set looks to be well "loved" and it would fit in.
You sure you don't want an American Flyer 1681?

Those Flyer locomotives are beautiful! except for that headlight. Love to get one down the road.
The Problem with the Flyer 1681, is that it does not have the same couplers as the Lionel cars I have, and also the Lionel 1681
belonged to my grandpa, so I feel I should get it since the engine has been missing for years.
I just checked my box of prewar I just came up with a 1689 and 1666. Then I checked my prewar guide to see what a 1681 looks like. You would think it would be easy to find but the motor Lionel used was not very robust(imo). I have been looking for a good replacement for my 1700e set and they are hard to find. I will keep an eye out for one for you.

Did you ever find a 1681/1681E
Sadly not yet but I'm still trying to find one cheap that isn't an auction because I don't like auctions.
I'll be going to a show tommorrow. If I see a 1681, I'll let you know. Take care.
As mentioned earlier (Oct. 20th), I have 2 of these and they are both for sale. Contact me offline and we can discuss the particulars.

there you go!
Let me know if you need one and I will dig through my stuff
Well, no 1681E at the show. I think you'll have better luck with Jagrick or Modernera. Have fun, Mercury.
I asked my grandpa about the engine that went with cars and he thought the engine was all black which is odd for a 1681 so I am wondering if there was any other engines that went with the tender.
There were lots of variations and anything is possible!
Also, you generally get what you pay for, and I would go for a quality piece to match your heirlooms!
All 1681/1681E I have seen are all red or black with red frame.
There were some black 1681s.........Lionel made quite a few variations of most engines in their history. There is also another engine they made that was the 1661E. Pretty much the same style of engine/tender combination. Take care.
Mercury Marx. I have a lone loco w/o a tender. The boiler has been painted black (inside still original red). It has copper trim painted over. The motor runs, e-unit works, and has runable wheels. Boiler front is missing and I do not have one. Both drive rods are missing also. The headlight socket is there, but light not working. I will donate to you in honor of your grandfather, if you think this is workable for you. Just send me your name and address. The Old Man !
Can you post A picture?
I will get my son Bill to post a picture over the weekend. Harry
great offer Henry, and if he doesn't want it.......
Very nice offer, Harry. I hope Mercury takes you up on it.

now that looks like a great offer for sure. wouldn't have a 226E you'd wanna donate?
Before I go an farther I need to know from anyone if there is any one who sells both the front of the engine and the dive rod.
that might be a junk box score for those parts, but with a running engine donated, you'll still be a head of the game.
I have an old customer here in the shop who was one of the 900 and some people who have read this ongoing post. He also needed a motor, so I am withdrawing this offer as I have not heard back anything since posting the pictures, and a further notice of looking for parts. Sincerely Harry
He looked the gift horse in the mouth too much. Nice of you to offer it to him, he missed his chance!
I have not heard back anything since posting the pictures, and a further notice of looking for parts. Sincerely Harry
Good for you, Harry. What did you receive for your kindness? A slap in the face. The OP did not like auctions? One complete w/tender (C-6) just closed @ $56.+s/h. Somethings are hard to understand . Must be cause I'm an old phart.
God Bless,
"Pappy"
I sent a message to Bill a few days ago offering to buy it if the OP did not come through. Oh well, mine will get repaired some other day.
