It is time for me to get a steam locomotive to run (not collect) for my set, smoother than my fast running energy hog Scout.    The little 0-4-0s are trouble for me when crossing switches, etc.  so I am ruling those out.  I only pull short trains of 8 cars or less.   Looking for reliability and modest cost ($75 to $125ish).  Are there any candidates?  Hopefully 0-27?  (No Christmas or Holiday-type decorations.)

Thanks for any recommendations.

My first O gauge was a Lionel 2055.  From 1952-53 and O27.  It was and is a great runner.  The 2065 was about the same and I think these are a great value, and widely available.  You'll pay a lot for one w/ boxes, but if you don't care about that, a lot less.  There's one with a whistle tender,  that looks great at $ 130 on that auction site.

I agree wholeheartedly.   The 8600 baby Hudson in my opinion was the best of the bunch from that era.  It had no running issues and is a sharp looking engine.  I bought mine brand new in 1976 along with the entire Empire State Express set and still have it to this day and it still runs great.

Guys,

I just snatched up a 1982 Joshua Cowen 8210 Hudson with tender on Ebay for $99.   Seller says it runs very well in forward and reverse.  Picture of rollers show no real wear.    No sound board or E-Switch, but I don't care.  It looks identical to the Lionel C&A 8101 (Maroon paint), but without the silver painted nose.

Please tell me that this is one of the Baby Hudsons.  :-)
